So, Paul has asked me to find some of his older photos of this wonderful Elton Crossing layout (intact just looking back over the photos on the Facebook group has reminded me the wonderful progress Paul made on this... I would love to see it at an exhibition, but I fear that due to a design feature, it may be one of those wonderful layouts that “never leave the home” (to coin a phrase used my Model Rail Magazine)

I’ll start with the crossing - this was one of my designs that Paul tweaked with his own gate posts and scratch built frame. We later revised the lamps I had done to be open inside and two parts (rather than a one piece clear part) to house the LED’s to allow illumination. The gates are scale replicas of the wooden NSR gates used at this crossing.

I’m sure Paul can add much more to the following photos.

Working gates were the order of the day.

I think these two photos show just how well Paul captured the location even at the early stage.

And the other main request was for a signal box.

Luckily, Paul was part of a small team who 40+years ago now we’re resposible for acquiring this very box for preservation. It was moved to the Cheddleton Railway Centre, now the Churnet Valley Railway, where it still works controlling the main line and sidings at Cheddleton.

Thankfully, one of the other gents involved supplied me with original drawings of the box, and along with current dimensions etc from on site visits, this 3D design and printed model was one of the first items I designed. (It also features a M&H lever frame and other NSR signal box interior items.

As it was a prototype, there were a few issues.... the finials were designed as part of the model... they didn’t come out very well, so I believe Paul made new ones. The later designs were modified to have the finials made separate in a more finer detail plastic.

I also made a mistake on the slating of the roof over how it should overlap the facia/bargeboards. Paul made mods here too. I’ve changed the final design that is for sale also. It also shows Paul’s new hand made finial.

Showing the interlocking room. Paul made some name boards but I don’t think he was happy with the wrong font... that lead to a new challenge for me. To work out how to create a font. Took me around a week, but that gave me the flexibility to use and create name boards with a genuine LMS font.

Which lead to a new set of crossing boards being made. Note the shorter one for the porch end of the box, and the longer one for the far side.

Nicely put Andy... gosh that takes me back a bit to the days of hand building points. The sad thing is unfortunately this layout isn't portable... that was a king size mistake but ever the optimist me I'm confident the next one will be. I did it once so I can do it again and the Leek Arm doesn't have to be an exact copy of the original, it can have the Cone Tunnel at one end and the Shunting bridge at the other with say a level crossing in the middle. The real location had a scrap yard, a golf course, a football pitch, a pub and a sewage works so what more could any connoisseurs of variation want? :avatar: Oh and I nearly forgot a derelict canal basin.

Simple copy, save to phone, upload lol

Anyway, WHY is not portable? What can’t be changed to make it so? It’s all electrical is it not?

(Btw, have you mentioned your other “signal box” to control the layout?)

I really must get up and have look.if only I had something to run on it in O to bring up. I have some time off work at the end of sept.

    Hi York Paul,

Earlier today I tried to reply to your latest very informative message to me but my text seems to be lost in the ether for some reason! All that happened was that your own information seemed to be thrown back at you. For that reason I have resorted to your original thread. I apologise, and hope you get this one. I'm truly looking forward to a mutual exchange of knowledge about your exciting project.

    Best,
    Jowen.

    Hi Jowen,

Not sure what happened with your texts ... I have a pm from yourself which I've not had chance to reply to due to be spending time putting the finishing touches to the 4mm "Name the Bridge" competition prize which I'm sponsoring. I have read your pm and find it very informative indeed so thank you for all your helpful advice and knowledge share.

Now as a matter of interest when originally building Elton Crossing all I had apart from some memory of the site in derelict condition was a few pictures of the crossing house taken by Ian Bowland, a few old OS maps and some photos taken by Alan Baker, to try and get some sense of scale and size I had to resort to counting bricks and roof tiles to get proportions and also employ the artists trick of sight size measurement. I don't with this method I was far out, only recently I managed to get hold of an LMS drawing plan of the Elton sight complete with measurements which stated the Co op Siding was 78 yards in length to the clearance point of number 11 crossover road, my model was only a scale 16 yards short. One thing that did surprise me was the actual length of the coal porters loading stage, I didn't realise it extended all the way up to the yard gate... so I'll have to modify the model to suit.

It may be best to chat about this here as we have a few folk who follow and model the Knotty and may well find what we find to talk about quite interesting. Anyway great to have you on board and yes I'd love to bring the Elton Crossing layout back on stream again and update it with your helpful input which is much appreciated.

    regards York Paul

Yes, the coal wharf was extended as you say and it was also covered. It was open on to the siding (obviously) and open on the opposite side on to the narrow yard. The property beyond the yard belonged to Fodens.
Did you get the message that my mother was a signal woman at the Crossing from 1959 to its closure in 1971? She was invited to Cheddleton to view the restoration progress shortly before it was reopened there.
I shot a short movie of her at work in 1960 (std 8 Agfacolor). This is now transferred to DVD. I'll try to get a copy over to you sometime soon.

    Cheers,
    Jowen.

I didn't know the coal wharf was covered... was that a type of canopy then ? One of Alan Baker's photos taken at the time of the main line electrification show a wooden platform and shed with side wall sleepers but not covering the coal landing, presumably this would have been when the box was fitted with some electric lever locks on 9 FPL and 10 points in conjunction with track circuits and the No 6 Call On signal was motor worked. I presume this was all done so that Elton became the fringe box to Sandbach when the siding which fed Prings and Fodens sidings was ceased being used under single line arrangements. One question do you remember if the Co-op coal siding had a set of traps on it against the No 11 crossover road points ? The 1934 plans shows it did and I wondered if these were worked by a manual hold up lever as it certainly wasn't worked or controlled from the lever frame in the box as some sort of Tyer's lock.

Yes I remember meeting your Mum at Cheddleton all those years ago when we had just finished restoration, I seem to recall her comments of how unaltered it looked I've also seen a photo of here working the box, the picture was taken in the doorway and the Tyers No6 token machine is clearly visible in front of the telephone board and table at the front wndows. My sad regret in restoring the box was all the dark brown paint on the walls which I removed was actually the original NSR paint / varnish... Elton box had never had an internal repaint in all those years apart from probably the ceiling and sash sliding windows.

    Hi Jowen,

I work as a volunteer at Cheddleton and often use this box. I’ve took up 3D design and print in the last few years and Elton Crossing box was my first project.
All of this history is fantastic to learn (as I think the box was preserved around the year I was born) and didn’t start there till 1996. Thankfully it’s future looks bright with a slightly extended frame and being brought in to use for controlling a bit more than just the yard entrance.

    Andy

No I hadn't forgotten to mention the box Mr S... I was just saving the details hoping you'd come in as part of this convo. :tophat::avatar: You can mention the printed gates, nameboards and mileposts too not to mention the WC which goes in the crossing keepers outside closet :avatar:

That's because I haven't built the closet yet... hopefully this renewed interest in Elton Crossing will see development progress again.

    Hi Andy,
Sorry about the delayed response. I have been in Newcastle for a few days.

It's good to know that the old Box is still having an exceptionally useful second life.
Thanks also for the shapeways email address. I find it astonishing that that they produce this kit. I have never modelled in 4mm. but I may attempt this one purely for nostalgic reasons!
I will also make the effort to revisit Cheddleton sometime soon - may see you there.
    Best, Jowen.
