More progress today, Finished off the main leading edge of the platform I think it more clearly defines the platform edge with the white marking and basically makes it more crisp. Then moved onto the bay platform following the same methods. So the bay platform is now complete as well and the glue needs to dry overnight A view over the wall to the side seldom seen More edging is required for the back of the far end of the platform, but first I have to make a few decisions on a few things. The main decision being the station building, where and how that is going to be placed on the platform. I need also to determine whether the platform surface will be gravel or paved or a mixture of the two.....I think I`m leaning towards a mixture. Also I would like to have a longish canopy along most of the bay platform, so this probably should be paved underneath. Anyhow.....I`ll work it out........let`s face it...I`ve got this far so far.... Gormo
I reckon completely paved. Platforms needed to be able to handle lots of feet plus baggage trolleys. However some had gravel strips where people were unlikely to walk as shown below, but mostly all paving. Once down slabs needed little maintenance.
Looking good Gormo. The footbridge looks the part. A nice length of spear fencing along the rail corridor would really set the scene off ! I found this excellent photo of Fairford Station (GWR) showing four different surfaces on the one platform. Looks like it has smaller concrete pavers outside the pagoda hut, larger concrete pavers along the platform, exposed brick pavers at the far end and gravel off towards the back of the platform. Now that would be fun to model !! Photo courtesy of Kenneth Potter Cheers, Gary.
Interesting Gary........ Not necessarily the condition of the station, but the mix of paving materials. I have mixed it up before on GCJ and that seems to work well enough. I was looking at Bewdley today and the platforms there have brick pavers which is appealing. Gormo
I do like the mix of paved materials. Certainly adds interest, especially for a branch line station ! Cheers, Gary.
Well I`ve made a start on the paving, I`m going to use a mixture of brick pavers, concrete pavers, possibly some bitumen and maybe some gravel although this will be a minute amount at the far end of the platform, if used at all. These bricks are from a free texture download, but modified in LibreOffice Draw. There were a few white pavers in the mix that seemed to distract from the overall texture, so I used the colour replacer feature to alter them. I will weather them even more when they`re all installed to grey them up a bit more. The paper is sealed, marked out and cut to shape, then glued to the same type of cereal box card as used for the edging. The card is then carefully cut around the shape of the paper and then glued in place with PVA. I may start the concrete paving next and butt it up to the brick pavers here...???... I am going to be guided by Bewdley Station, which has brick pavers all the way along both platforms and a most interesting building which I will try and scratch build. As mentioned above, I`m not going to brick pave the whole platform though. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6Hk8KCcwAwg/VT4Behc3NLI/AAAAAAAAltE/fp8YHxgGL-g/s1600/DSCF1360.JPG More as it happens Gormo
Thanks Gary.... The platform is nearing completion and I`m now into the tidying up stage Concrete pavers have been added into the mix to suggest renewal / repair of parts of the platform, which originally was all brick paved. Progressing forward towards the Eastern end. Once the whole platform had been paved, I then turned my attention to cleaning up the platform edges. The edge on the right has been tidied and the left will be done tomorrow More as it happens Gormo
Excellant results Gormo, and congrats on POTW - although Pic of the week, needs to be a bit more frequent Paul
I do have a question, then I'll get back in the box ...... What period are you modelling, and if pre-war were the platform edges painted white ? Away to hide in the box Paul
Knock Knock......( that`s me knocking on the box ).......... I am modelling late 1950`s early 1960`s so I think it`s feasible to have the platform edge painted white.? As usual, there always can be a convenient false history if required...... This online image seems to be about the right period.......note the platform edge. https://www.warwickshirerailways.com/gwr/widneymanor/gwrwm1897.jpg And this one too http://www.warwickshirerailways.com/lms/lnwr/greatbarr/lnwrgb2284.jpg Gormo
Well here we are folks, Final pics of the finished platform......well the basics are finished anyway.. So that`s it folks....I think the resurfacing has freshened up the platform and made it ready for it`s next journey as part of a model railway. On to the next task now, which probably should be refilling the ballast between the track and the platform.?.....but we`ll wait and see which way the wind blows. And thanks for pic of the week too...
