OK Folks, The fencing is finished on the cattle dock. I have a few things going on at the moment, so modelling time is restricted somewhat.........anyhow.....that`s life......... No good whinging about it.......just get in and do it..... So here is the completed fencing with gaps for gates The gap at the right hand end is for a single gate that gives direct access to and from the dock for station staff or stock handlers. It may not be prototypical, but there you are..?????.........it looks alright to me.... As far as gates are concerned, there will be double gates at the top of the ramp where it meets the dock, double gates in the middle of the dock to establish two possible holding areas, double gates in the two openings facing the track, and a single gate at the very end of the right hand side for people only. I now need to paint some gates and hinges etc and a bunch of detail parts and signs to finish it off........plus quite a few other bits and pieces. Not to mention touch ups....... Gormo
G`day Folks, I`ve got the gates and hinges, gate catches and a couple of stand pipes in today I have put a stand pipe in each half section of the dock The stand pipe in the other section plus the single gate installed Well it just needs signs, drains, troughs, cow pats, lights etc.....this is one complicated kit..............anyhow the hard part is done. An interesting side to this kit is the gate catches........they are shown on the instructions, but for the life of me, I can`t find them in there amongst the bits and pieces...... So I made some from wire.......not too difficult...... Gormo
G`day Folks, A little bit more done today in between other odds and sods. I needed to create some edging for the rest of the platform to continue down through the Goods Shed towards the far end of the platform. The idea was to try and match the edging on the Cattle Dock minus the drain. A family friend donated some mounting board card which is ideal for these narrow dimensions. The paving was marked out and scored with a dry biro pen. The joins in the paving were highlighted with an HB pencil and the whole lot was given a coat of Grey acrylic followed by a dark wash. Colour matching was checked and it was determined another coat of the wash was required. Then decided to make a drain grate that will butt up to the end of the open drain that runs along the length of the Cattle Dock The grate is cut from nylon fly screen mesh The drain was marked out onto the card and I removed a layer of paper to set it into. The mounting board card is not thick enough to sit flush with the dock, so some cereal box card has been glued down to bring the height up. The paving was just sat on the card to check the height. You can see I`ve cut an edge around the drain and applied some weathering Better seen in this pic Once the cereal box card has set in place, the paving can be permanently set in place. More as it happens Gormo
Getting close to installation now Paving and gravel are both set in....plus troughs signs etc. And some test running has been done to make sure clearances are OK......and they are OK.... The end section of grey card near the steps has to be developed as a holding yard with fencing and I may need an overlay for the bottom of the back scene. I also need to look at the stonework between the tracks with troughs and drains......not terribly difficult , but still required to finish it off properly. Then we move on to the Good Shed which will make a fundamental change to the whole area. More as it happens Gormo
Some progress has been made on the Goods Shed design. I am drawing it up as usual in LibreOffice Draw, and gradually bringing it together. I have five pages worth at the moment and when I`m happy with it, I`ll print it out and crack on. I have the brick papers to skin it internally and externally.......all the windows have been acquired and the doors are good to go. This will be a removable Goods Shed, as I want access to the track for cleaning when required. It is unusual compared to most Goods Shed builds in that the internal platform is not built into the model, but rather, the model sits on the platform just recently built. This method requires one wall to be taller than the other walls The model is also a partial low relief build to suit the site which also makes it different. Anyhow I don`t know how far I will get with it in the short term, as I have to travel interstate soon.......so we`ll see...... Gormo
G`day Folks, I have returned home to Sydney from Queensland........I have been back just over a week now and have been busy here as well ,taking care of some family business. My daughter and my Grandson have moved in with us until they can find themselves a property in Sydney, so we have a full house at the moment, and to top it off, my wife has caught Covid She is OK thankfully and the rest of us are OK as well.........no symptoms yet......fingers crossed. So I have taken the plunge and printed out my Goods Shed design over the last two days......no pictures yet.....I have been gluing the paper sheets to card today and cutting out windows etc. I am using cereal box card for this build, as I find it easier to cut.......I have injured my right hand while I was away and don`t have full use or strength in it just yet, so thicker card is a bit of a challenge....... Anyhow....it may be a blessing in disguise.....as I`m creating four layers in the side wall and the thicker card would have been too thick. I have also acquired some kits to build for Bamford. .......a Water Crane with fire devil.......very hard to source here in Oz when I was searching a few weeks ago, but I found one in Hervey Bay in Qld........A Yard Crane ( Ratio )......some Peco Phone Boxes.......and some Cows for the Cattle Dock. And finally, my daughter bought me a beautiful well cared for Southern loco......pics to follow. It`s a bit of a sad story with this loco.......the old gent who owned the loco has reached that stage of life where he has to go into a nursing home and can no longer have a model railway. His locos are for sale at my local hobby shop and they are in great condition. I guess we will all face that sort of future and it will be hard to let go of a hobby you love. I will update when time permits Gormo
Good to hear your home with your family in tow. No good about Mrs G coming down with the Big C and you injuring your hand is real a bummer. Anyhow, you all take it easy and get well soon. Take care. Cheers, Gary.
G`day Folks, Some progress pics as promised. The side wall of Bamford Goods Shed that will sit between tracks. The brick paper has yet to be cut and folded around the window openings. All these parts being so thin, tend to bow once they have paper applied, so the whole lot is stacked under considerable weight out in the shed. I will do a check on it through the day to see how it`s going And finally my new ( second hand ) loco........Hornby Southern Schools Class loco Cranleigh....a gift from my daughter. It runs extremely well, good at slow speed in either direction and smooth at speed......it just needs a crew to finish it off. Gormo
Ooh-la-la... Southern ! Is this the beginning of something great ? The Schools Class is a lovely locomotive. Cheers, Gary.
Thanks Folks for your good wishes..... The Goods Shed continues to progress slowly The main outer wall has been skinned with brick paper, same as the station building, and arched lintels and brick sills have been applied. At the moment the wall is under weight with a filler panel being glued behind it. The end walls are cut out from thick card and are in the process of receiving brick paper The inner parts of all walls will be clad in painted brick paper as can be seen on the main inner wall to the left in the pic below. More as it happens Gormo
Glad your back home, and hopefully things settle down. Pass on to Mrs G our best wishes to get over Covid. Has Grandad got a new apprentice ?. Goods shed is looking good, and sounds like your mojo has come home as well. Paul
G`day Paul, Mrs. G is doing well now and testing clear........she isolated herself from the family, only appearing when necessary, which has resulted in the rest of us being kept safe. I`m not sure yet about my Grandson`s plans........he spends a lot of time online and we might need to coax him away from that and outdoors for a change..... The Goods shed is coming along gradually.....update below One end wall with internal painted brick fitted. The triangular piece is a roof support that will receive painted brick covering as well. The side wall overlay also has been clad in brick paper.......this is a view where the cut outs have been removed and the flaps were folded back prior to gluing. The overlay was then glued to the side wall and is currently under weights The other side.......still needs lintels etc. Time to knock off for the day More as it happens Gormo
