Gormo most ironically today on BBC Radio 2 Jeremy Vile they were talking about the concept of reversing the Beeching cuts by finding ways to redress the overcrowding rail system by increasing capacity and reopening certain closed lines, York to Hull and the continuation of the reopened line from Hawes all the way to Carlisle were cited along with the woodhead route. I forget the others which were mentioned but the consensus of political opinion is that mass rail closures were a mistake... I think many people even 40 years ago would have agreed on that one.
Well just ain`t it the way things go Paul, I write something stupid and ridiculous and what do you know..????......it may come to fruition ????? Well you could knock me down with a feather....... Gormo.
Yes i know you were really only playing with words Gormo and Gary's comment was quite funny but as they say what goes round comes round... so it may well be fashionable again to relay the closed railways and expand them again. Great Chesterford doesn't need boarded up stations with overgrown weed infested platforms with tin bus shelters on them.
Just like here in Sydney with the 'light rail'. We once had trams running around the city and suburbs. But we can't call the light rail trams as trams occupy and share the roads, unlike the light rail which has it's own corridor, except in the heart of the city, George Street... Cheers, Gary.
I think in the UK the only thing we could possibly thank Dr Beeching for is the fact that many of the lines he closed in the 60's now operate at least in part, as independent Heritage lines. It's quite possible that many of these lines would have closed eventually under 'natural wastage' as they would in time have become so underused as to become a liability rather than an asset. People forget that a good number of lines had closed over time well before the advent of the Beeching Plan, and doubtless this would have continued without it, but in it's haste to save cash, the Government of the day decided on a mass cull of 'uneconomic' lines, though some undoubtedly were closed on principle whilst still being financially viable, and would likely still have been so to the present day. I recall in my youth, many Cities having tram systems, the last of which were swept away by the early 60's as being 'Old Fashioned', but now those Cities still without a new tram or 'Light Railway' system are busy lobbying Government for funds to build them, in part due to pollution, choked roads, climate change etc. How times change, or do they really? Keith.
Yes Gary Paul and Pete, I think what we can all take from all this, is the fact that politicians really don`t have a clue and don`t care about providing services for the future. They are focused on the here and now and getting re-elected. We have an example here in Sydney, where our water supply, Warragamba Dam, was built between 1948 and 1960 after a critical water shortage here in Sydney during WWII. Sydney`s population had grown from about 1.7million to just over 2 million by the time the dam was finished, due mostly to post war immigration. At the time of completion, and based upon the data about population growth, the experts at the time anticipated that the dam would only be able to service the needs of the Sydney population adequately until about the year 2000, and consequently recommended that future governments consider additional projects to future proof Sydney`s water supply. So what was done.?......nothing really.......we have had a desalination plant built, which can help a little towards the problem, but that was built late in the day. Sydney is on water restrictions now because the dam is very low and we don`t have enough rain to top it up properly........but there you are.??? What can you do..????......governments don`t want to spend money on the future, even though they can tell you that they are, and they can show you a list of all the crap they`ve done. But show me one politician who has the guts to plan 40 or 50 years ahead and provide a secure future for our Grandchildren. I bet you can`t........anywhere in the World. Gormo
Its all short term policy... for the here and now... this 500 million is only to fund feasability studies that's all.
Of course...they are always thinking about us "what do they need to do to get our votes" and also praying that we do. Cheers and happy modelling is better than dealing with the pollies. Richard
Good question Richard....and I quote..."what do they need to do to get our votes" I reckon Bridget McKenzie would know how to answer that one..........or maybe not...???? For you overseas folks, Bridget McKenzie is one of our politicians over here in Oz, who just resigned from her position because it was found that she had doled out Sports Grants to marginal seats when she was the Sports Minister. It was also found that she was a member of one of the clubs that received a grant, therefore conflict of interest. You see...if our politicians were as smart as they would have us believe they are......they wouldn`t get caught out. Oh fiddley dee..... Gormo
And it's the same the world over I'm afraid. The system is rotten to the core. Never mind ..... just make sure she doesn't get a job on the board of Gormo industries. Cheers Toto
Yikes !!!!!...... Oh no.....I`d better let the boys know.........Dodgey Bob is our HR Dept. head....I`ll send him an email...... Gormo
