Can anyone suggest which colour in the Vallejo range matches the GWR coach brown please?

Sorry Ron you are a week to late with your question. I gave away my Railmatch GWR Brown paint last week so I have nothing to compare to but I would certainly give Model Colour 70.941 Burnt Umber a try. which is RAL 8014

A search for GWR Coaching stock brown, has Railmatch's version described as RAL 8017 which equates to Vallejo Model Color Hull Red (also RAL 8017) which says that I wasn't too far off with 8014 and of course the final colour will depend on what colour primer you use.
Under brown topcoats I have started to use Red oxide with a blob of dark grey to alter it to a more brown spectrum.

Hello Rob Pulham, and others, undercoat colour is rarely discussed , yet even today, undercoat colour does effect the top coat colour. As the late David Jenkinson, and other LMS/MR/LNWR modellers have commented, Crewe used a lead grey undercoat, and Derby used a red oxide/bauxite colour, which makes sense when the Crewe result was a deep shiny black, and the Derby result was a rich crimson lake. When the LMS then restricted Crimson Lake to selected main line classes only, the colour variation became more apparent. The other aspect of this is there was no reason for either Crewe, or Derby, to change their undercoat colour, especially when most locomotives went out in black (plain, or with thin red lining !)

As an aside, according to the late RJ Essery, the LMS initially at least, adopts grey for wagons due to the availability of surplus WD grey*, hence why photos of wagons outshopped in the 1920s had varying shades of grey, depending what was available. I have often wondered if GWR dark wagon grey was partially due availability of RN navy grey* from suppliers to Plymouth Naval Dockyard.

Re WD Grey, and RN Grey, names encompasses the various shades used, as opposed to the various official names.

    Regards to all, Echidna .
