    Thanks Paul, Gary and Ron.

I have used tissue before but I needed a standard angled ridge for this one, the problem lay beneath it where I had left the string curved over the ridge forming a curve, all cut off now and new ridge fitted.

As for the gutter that will be from thin grey paper, I have tried foil in the past but had less success with that.

    Thanks Kimbo,

I'm trying to follow an old photograph as closely as I can but I already know that I have got some of the measurements wrong because of how it looks in its setting, not to worry it's close enough.

I seem to have had a bit of extra time the last few days or else the spring like weather now and again is making me work faster, whatever it is here is the latest instalment.

I completed the tile roof painting by going over it with yellow ochre to bring out a slightly more orange look to the tiles and to lighten them, I could then brush some black powder paint into them to highlight the gaps and ridges to get that individual tile look rather than strips.

So here are a couple of pictures to show the result.

The office projection looks a different colour but was in full sunlight at the time, it does nee a little more work though as a new ridge has been fitted, no distortion in it this time.

While I had the airbrush out it was filled with a light grey wash with a little blue - for slate - and the other Mill roof was also lightened.

Again the black powder paint was brushed on to highlight. It's not the best slate roof I've ever made as the bottom rows are a bit rougher than I would like but that is when my double tennis elbow was at its worst. Luckily there are a couple of trees to be planted in front when it's finally fixed in place, I may knock up a couple of Silver Birch when the time comes as they have a thin canopy, mind you it will be autumn so most of the leaves will be on the ground anyway.:whatever:

For the sharp eyed amongst you, did you spot the Setts under the building?

I wanted these around it so looked at what I had in my junk, I mean stock box and found some thin sheets of polystyrene just the right thickness to reach the track level of the line into the building. Hmmm! how good a job could I make of those I wondered, only one way to find out.

I scribed some lines to get a size of 3 x 4mm that took a few hours with an old knife blade and when completed I slapped a bit of grey paint on it, as you would expect the odd knife wander happens now and again.

Now how will I fix that....

a bit of thin kitchen roll I think....

a bit of paint aand ccut the grooves again....

    That'll do nicely.

So I filled the other slips, tooe for another grey spray of varying shades before again adding the black powder and see what we've got.

A closer look with some yellow to see if it looks moss like? not sure about that.

and a final view at an angle catching the light.

The next job up is to fit the setts around the building to secure it to its base, I can then decide where the setts stop and the normal ground starts in the rest of the yard and road.
Then it's a couple of doors and all the painting of the brick walls.

Thanks for popping in and hopefully not too long before the next post.

    Jim

The sets are really impressive - must store that one for future use.

With the weather getting a little warmer I have started work back out in the shed to correct a few things that have been bugging me, anyone who knows me well is aware that I have a tendency to scrap something and do it again if it doesn't look right to me.

One of those things was this little scene.

I had used it as a screen saver all winter and though happy at first I soon started to dislike the change from scenery to backscene, so it had to go.

I ordered some polymer scenes from Art Printers and got a good discount for 40ft of the 15" ones, These were fitted to the wall once they were lined up, here are some of them during trial fit.

I managed to squeeze out another 70mm or so extra space and made up a plank to fill the space and grassed it.

Once this was fitted it was onto making bushes.

    Trees

All I had to do then was fit it all together and see how it looked.

Still a little more to do but I think it blends in better than my first effort, I'm not too sure about that large dark bush though so I might remove that as it hides a small tree right at the back that creates a forced perspective. With the addition of another small tree between that and the second from the front I will have four trees decreasing in size from front to back, it worked with the hedge further to the right which disappears into the backscene.

Well that's one little niggle out the way and I feel happier about it.

It is looking very nice Jim. The new backscene has really lifted the scene.:thumbs::thumbs:

Just out of curiosity, will you be planting any evergreen trees in the scenes ??

    Cheers, Gary.

Thanks for the replies lads and glad you like it too.

As for the evergreens Gary I won't be adding any as I have no evidence of them around the area, it seemed to be mostly Elm or Oak within the hedgerows and though I lived on the Somerset side of the Blackdowns side I cannot remember any down there either. There were a few on the country estates though but mainly as feature trees such as Scots pines.

Got to take a break for a few days now but will be back with an update on the Mill/Factory later.

    Cheers for now

    Jim

    Hi

It's been around a month now and despite being busy with my main role at home I have managed to spend some time on the layout.

I have still been improving the scenery and how it was blending into the backscene, this involved making a few more trees so I thought I would share how I go about this.

First of all it is soldering some speaker cable to a nail head, in this case around 250 strands.

Then it's a case of twisting into a tree shape which can take a few hours but I am getting quite quick at it now especially when following some cricket.

It's then a case of covering with some sort of filler, I use some flexible grey floor tile grout that I had leftover from some DIY a few years ago, I got so carried away here I forgot to photograph a couple of stages. It dries very quickly so I was soon wiping each strand with a smear of superglue before pushing some silk lap onto the branches to create something that looks like a stick of candy floss, it was then cut and pulled off until there was a thin covering at the end of each strand of wire, the whole thing was then sprayed with hairspray and covered with my homemade scatter material.

eThe silk lap in the foreground to the left of the tree
    [IMG]

The tree was then added to the layout and some hedging.

and made sure it blended into the backscene[IMG]

Other work is still ongoing and I will post when I have time again.

    Happy modelling lads

    Jim

    Hi all

It's been quite some time since I last logged on as my caring role takes up so much of my time now, a pity really as there have been an odd competition or two I would have liked to enter including the current one but such things sit low on the list of priorities.

Since last posting there has been some progress on the layout and while I was browsing my pictures I thought it best to share a few, so here goes.

I left the Butter factory almost completed, sadly it has still a few final things to do, painting mostly but it was placed in position to see how it looked so that is the first one to share.

I think once it and the groundwork are complete it will look OK.

One of the other things I needed was a boiler house for the factory, for anyone familiar with Hemyock they will be thinking of the tall chimney seen in many photographs of the station, however this was not there in the period I model, in that case what was.
Well, I did find this old photograph. (13th one down)

    old]http://blackdownarchives.org.uk/category/villages/hemyock/] old boiler house[/url]

So here are a few pics of my version.

But most of the time I had during the summer was making yet more trees and bushes and finishing the backscene area.
    So yet more pics

First the competed willow overhanging the pool

    The meadow
    [IMG]

and finally a B&W shot of my track testing engine with the scratchbuilt coach (aided by the portrait cutter) and a ratio coach.

That's it for now, not too sure when I'll be back but not too long I hope.

All the best and happy modelling.

    Jim

Nice to hear from you again Jim, some cracking photos on your link, the boiler is just crying out to be modelled, and you have done a great job with your creation .
The layout is looking good, if you get the chance some more pics would be great!

    Cheer's, Pete.
