Quick question before I install the Weybourne/Sheringham layout into the shed, what height is the best for viewing/operating?I set it at 38" in the old shed due to some low windows but this time there is no restriction, so is 48" to high or about right??

    CheersRon

Don't think there's a definitive answer Ron, it's whatever suits.

But I do know that if I was starting again in the garage and knew how much space would become available, I would have made the fiddle yard board higher than the rest so that the line from the fiddle yard crossed the main line over a bridge. rather than the diamond crossing I originally had.

So maybe look at your track plan to determine any levels/gradients before setting any board heights.

Hi Ron the hight that is right is the right hight for you:facepalm::scratchchin:

Don't build it to suit someone else it should be at a hight that is suitable for your situation size of shed, storage required under etc and most important a nice hight for you to work at, consider sitting or standing to do the work etc Moonan flats has a board hight of 48" above the floor and it's good to work on whilst standing and I have some adjustable hight bar style stools for siting and working or Opperation. However in a small space at 48" it may make the space seam even smaller.

Again make it to suit you situation and you requirements http://www.click

Ron, what height do you want to view the layout at.

For Viccy rd, I made the track height at 42" - eye level for me when I'm sitting on my computer swivel chair, however at the Dundee show, we did notice a lot of people having to stoop to see the layout, the pelmet of course stopped people peering down over the layout. So when the coffin was built we took advantage of the 6" increase of height, and still remained visible for kids and wheel chair users.

    Hope that helps

:scratchchin: probably higher than the floor ......... But lower than the roof I'd think.:avatar:

The R&GLR was about the 3 foot mark Ron. On hindsight, for operating, I think 4 foot would have been better but not so great for working on. If you were to install in modules, I'd go the 4 feet. If you baseboards are completeley fixed as one unit so to speak, I'd go 3 foot.

Your bang on the money thinking about this though as you know the story, once you've started it, it's a pain living with the wrong decision.

Whatever way you go, good luck.

    Cheers

Thanks all, I think that 48" (4') would be about right, the boards are only 24" (2') wide so not to much of a stretch! Not thought about height for the fiddle yard etc, I'll put my thinking cap on and have a look! :)

Here's a quick photo, wood is at the new 48" and the cable set at the old 36" high, tested it with a 24" wide board and no reaching problems (and easier to work underneath!). Also finished insulating the shed, the doors being the last thing!

Settled on 41" high. Have screwed a batten on the shed back complete with a piece of 24" wide hardboard to test the width/reach etc.. So I can get on with the electrics now!! :)

My track levels are basically 42" and 48", for any areas that I find are hard to reach one of those small plastic step stools gives me enough extra height to reach.
