I'm taking a short break from creating scenery for my Maron Station layout and will focus on the Engine shed for a bit. The shed building itself is a reclaimed Superquick double track construction, taken from my Parent's loft. It was on a old layout my Dad had built in the loft of the previous house. I is in remarkable condition considering it's been in the loft for over 30 years. Just a few minor repairs needed.

Having got stuck into the Scalescenes kits recently, I downloaded another one of their free samples: the inspection kit. I decided to keep it to a single length pit and not use the extension option. I sealed the print with Matt Varnish and added some coal ash from my fuel burning stove to replicate ash dumped by the locos. Another great build from the Scalescenes range and apart from the consumables expenditure (printer ink, card, paper & glue, which I already had around me) cost nothing. I decided against the lighting option, but have created a hole to fit a singular LED in the future.

Inspection pit fitted and rails glued in place, looks great! The Engine shed is coming along nicely.

I have used the excess hard standing form the inspection kit to create the floor of my engine shed.

A few photos of the shed and its interior. I plan to add more interior roof details in the near future.

For interior detailing, I have added some scratch built buffer stops and a welding station. To simulate welding, I have added a small 3V LED Under the baseboard. The light is from a small LED candle which are designed as a safer version of real candles for lighting Halloween pumpkins. The light flickers to create a welding effect, unfortunately the LED is yellow so is not that realistic. I plan to add an LED welding simulation kit in the future, when funds allow. For now this doesn't look too bad. I just need to add some model railway workers to complete the cameo.

Looks good. I've just built this inspection pit myself. I'll be adding the LED lighting to mine and installing it in the TMD which I intend to light as well.

    Hi all.

Thought I'd post up the latest on my engine shed build. I wanted to add more detail to the roof internals as it was bare card, so I added some grey tile paper and scratch built trusses. The trusses house the down lights, which were cheap battery operated LED Christmas lights.

I added smoke extractors to disguise the routing of the LED wires down the centre of the roof:

Still got some weathering to do as I'm sure the roof of a real steam loco shed was not this clean!

Here are some shots of the shed in situ with the lights on. I used some of the LEDs to also illuminate the inspection pit and the office building, which is actually 2 of the scalesenes coal office buildings cut and shut together to make a larger office. The effect is quite atmospheric!

    Have a good day

That looks great Andrew, I built something similar, a single road though, in 7mm. Just need to build something to put it on..........

Still needs a plug to be fitted so I can lift it for removability.

    Cheer's, Pete.

Nice work Andrew and very atmospheric... I really like how the lighting picks out the shiny rail tops. :tophat::tophat::tophat:

very nice there Pete, although for the size I was expecting a 2 road shed?

is it from your own design?

Could this be a subtle hint that you're planning a mini scene which illuminates ?

Hi Andy, I based it on the engine shed at Thaxted on the Elsenham and Thaxted branch in Cambridgeshire.
