I would imagine it'll be a job for the resistance iron for fitting them in place.

It sure is. I need to fit the buffer beam first though to get the positioning correct.

Just as an aside, this is the marking gauge that I made at school when I was 15. The paintwork has suffered a bit over the years but it still does the job and lives on my workbench as I do use it for modelling as well as more serious stuff.

The main body was an aluminium sand casting which we then turned and bored out for the main shaft and the thumb screw.
The scribing pin was hand filed and then hardened and tempered before being fitted and retained by a grub screw in the end.

Oddly I didn't have any issue when heating and melting the aluminium for this casting (our metalwork classroom had a proper forge) but a year later when I was melting aluminium for casting the body of my spirit level (no photo as it's lost in the bowels of the shed somewhere) as part of my O level final exam I passed out with the torch in my hand.

Funny what you remember from 40 odd years ago...

A bit like the shock one of my pals had when his Mum picked up the rolls of film he had got developed from our A level geology field trip.

The last few shots on the roll had some pictures of him passed out on his bed, wearing boots, a bright orange safety helmet, shaving cream eyebrows, beard and for dignity's sake shaving cream underpants. I suppose the main benefit for him was there was only a couple of months of term time left after the pictures were developed . I'm sure he will remember that for the rest of his life, if not we will remind him :avatar:
