Hi all, This came to in part payment for a job that I did and I had planned to use it in my garden but I have been persuaded not to worry about wiring up the garden railway and go Wireless instead. So this is now surplus to requirements As far as I know this has never been used but I don't know how 'old' it is hence no warranty with it. I have just tested it with one of my DCC fitted locos and it does what it says on the box. I am offering it as a cheap way into DCC at £90 plus postage at cost or I could take it along to Kettering show at the beginning of March. Attached files
Don't know much about them but at £90.00 it would be a good entry into DCC for someone. I'm sure it will go Rob. Toto
Got this itch but before I scratch it how much would suitable (basic) decoders cost? I know nothing of dcc .. yet! Ian vt
Hi Ian Basic decoders - Hattons, Gaugemaster Laisdcc, Hornby, Bachmann etc are between £10 & £15 Mid to high £18 to £30 DCC concepts, TCS, NCE, Lenz, ESU Sound decoders Hornby TTS approx £35, majority approx £100 Start with a couple of cheapos, these then become the test fitment for any loco - if it works you can replace it with a better one, safe in the knowledge your not going to fry it TCS offer a goof proof warranty - they will replace it even if you screwed up the wiring. The Zephyr is a good, fully functioned starter with no redundancy if you decide to expand to a higher end Digitrax system later. My usual recommendation is to try out different systems before you buy, but at that price, I think you will do well. There is much online experience to tap into as well.
Up till this time last year I had used a Zephyr for both Weybourne and Sheringbourne without any problems and still use it on the US layout !! Great bit of basic kit, can't go wrong Ian! CheersRon
Ok I've read quite a lot including the excellent tutorial on converting an Airfix Prairie and after weighing it up have decided at this stage I wont be moving over to dcc. It was very tempting at the price but before I purchase any more equipment I have decided to complete my relatively small layout and then judge what advantages I would gain with dcc over dc. Still got the itch though Ian vt
Ian, on a small single engine in steam layout then the benefits are minimal, but on a good loco slow running improves significantly, once you increase the number of loco's on the track, then with DCC you don't need to wire up sections, all tracks are live all the time. You do need to make sure you fit insulated breaks after the point V's on electrofrog points - ask Toto on that one. In theory you can wire the layout with just two wires, but as with everything we tend to complicate the hell out of things, and use the extra functionality DCC can offer. But that's another story / journey . Paul
