Ah now I see, if there's more than two brake shoes on a side, the box goes into the lost and found - for later attention. Suppose I can't criticise too much on that as I have a Nucast V2 sitting an a box marked similar for over 20 years .

Good luck with the build, looking forward to the pics

    Well,
here is where I am at so far with the Parkside Dundas cattle truck in O Gauge,
    [IMG]

as always, we start with the box of bits.
Installed the steel ( plastic ) bars along the open top panels.

Then added the separate planks which are notched to take the inside paertition walls.

Then installed the vertical iron work to the ends.

Then its on to fixing the sides and the ends onto the floor panel.

and then the two internal partitions,
    [IMG]

and then fixed the ribbing to the underside of he roof.

Then fixed the W irons onto the sole bars and fixed them in place.

The axle box installations are fitted to the W irons and once glued in the right locations ( allowing the axle boxes to move up and down in the W irons ) the wheels are fitted and tested to see if they run freely, which they do.

    Up on its feet,
    [IMG]

test fit the roof. The roof doesn't go on until the insides have been given a blast of paint. It is a better fit than is visible above, I just plopped it on there.
Still got the brake arrangement to glue in place. it is one of the easier arrangements although some of the parts need drilled in order to fit a plastic bar through them to bring it all together.
Buffers and couplings and then its ready for the paint shop.
I should complete it tonight and possibly get started on wagon number two.
any comments etc as usual ......
    cheers

Looking good so far Toto. I'm now looking forward to the paint and weathering, especially the distressed wood grain !

My tip : paint the inside of the wagon before gluing in the partitions. Paint the partitions whilst they are on the work bench, then glue into position when all is dry. ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

    Hi,
Partitions are already in Gary ..... should have left them out as you say. ....... lesson one learned........ lesson two ...... install the buffers before building the wagon. Would have been much easier and no reason why it can't be done that way. :scratchchin:

Hi Ian, I did say to Paul that I may get another one although I have a white metal cattle truck to build yet so may leave it at that. Mat cut a hole in the roof so it can take me giraffe. ( Gordon )

Hi Toto I think you need to have a second look at the way you have assembled the brakegear unless you have posted a mirror image of your model. A look at some of the pictures of the full size Diagram 40 wagons, which had probably all disappeared by 1937, will help. Don't forget that these wagons may well have never carried any livery apart from the early large size LNER lettering style as a result. These cattle wagons were also built from new with screw couplings and the longer 1' 8.5" buffers NOT the short 1' 6" buffers as supplied in the kit unfortunately

    Hi Adrian

You weren't on the other end of the phone while he was trying to assemble the brake gear, if there was a bleep on the line it was faulty :avatar:.

Toto, another on the to fix list ......

    Hi Adrian,

Thanks very much for the info. I'm a little bereft of that depth of knowledge unfortunately but it's all good to know. To be honest, your lucky you are not viewing it with a set of Ross Styles with a set of low profile Michelins on it. :avatar:

All part of the learning process and a great example of the information sharing benefits of the forum.

    Thanks for the post.

    Hi Toto,
I hate to point it out but you have the brake levers and guides pointing to the wrong end.
There was Board of Trade regulation that said that all brake levers on rolling stock had to operate from the right hand end of the wagon when looking from each side.
Although you will see some wagons in grouping livery with the levers still pointing to the left that's because all new stock had to be built with them pointing to the right and they had so many years to modify existing stock (I have in mind 1928 or 30) as the date to have them converted by.
If it's any consolation I have just had it pointed out that I only have half the number of roof vents needed on the Kirk alll 3rd that I am building - my mistake entirely as I had researched it but didn't remember when laying them out.

    Hi Rob,

Thanks for that. It was my very first wagon build and there are a few blunders on it. Due to my ham fistedness, it was lucky to have brakes at all. I really struggle with some of the finer parts. Hence the reason I still have about a dozen Parkside Dundas kits to start. :avatar:

I will get into them though.

Keep an eye open for me starting one off and feel free to show me the way.:avatar:

    Cheers

    Toto

Ps I'll get the instructions for the crane over soon.

    Toto

Don't worry you are not on your own. I still get Adrian Swain pointing out my errors with wagon brakes. The embarrassing thing is that I recently made the same mistake a second time.
The only saving grace is that it was on one of my own wagons rather than one for someone else or that I had built for sale.
Luckily I have managed to fix them, despite plastic being more unforgiving of mistakes than brass.
Not for this build, but if you do any of the Parkside or Slaters vans with brakes on one side and a just an actuating lever on the other side, the brakes go on the side with the cam..... now repeat after me, 'the brakes go on the side with the cam', 'the brakes go.........'
