I bought a Q1 on eBay last week and when it arrived it had a bit more work to be done than first expected.
Originally I was planning to just fit some nano leds to it, a flicker firebox, some light weathering and a service before selling it.
It arrived with a massive solder burn in the back of the cab and a section cut out from the side.
Anyway it's not a big deal I have started the repairs on it and will have it looking brand new in no time.

So here I have cut some clear plastic from an old Screw packet and glued it inside the cabin.

You can see here I have glued a small strip of plastic which was from a sprue on the Airfix Typhoon kit.
Once painted it will be good. The white putty is Mr Hobby Putty thinned with Laquer thinners.I will leave it for a few days before sanding it.

People who manage to do that sort of damage with a soldering iron are the kind you wouldn't want to be in the same room with when they have an iron in their hands I reckon, Steve. I had a similar experience not long ago with an EMU bought from a well known UK retailer, damage and soldering iron melt beyond belief. I'm obviously not as brave (or skilled) as you, 'cos I sent that one back rather than tackle it!:giggle:

    CAVEAT EMPTOR EBAYTOR

TRANSLATION: Let the EBay Buyer Beware.

Well I did some sanding on the body today and put more putty into the gaps that were left.

I also put real coal into the tender and some woodlands realistic water splashed over the back of the water tank area.

The loco had been refitted with Kaydee couplings and whoever did it attacked the defenceless loco with a grinder because they have done a real hatchet job on it.

The underside of the tender and the front buffer area also has solder damage which I have cleaned away with a scalpel and filled with putty.

I've not even looked at the electrics yet and I'm wondering if the decoder wires could verde in blue tack that had been painted black for some reason may not be a good sign.

Anyway I will persist with it, but shall not be buying secondhand loco on eBay again. When it is eventually finished I will sell it, but it will be going out in a lot better condition than it came in.

It makes a great 'how to' Steve but a bit of old fashioned honesty wouldn't have gone amis on the part of the flea-bayer y'know taking some responsibility for their actions.

If the condition wasn't mentioned in the description or shown in the pictures, I hope it will be reflected in the feedback :(

G'day all, yep I would have appreciated being told that there was so much damage to the model, but at the time I was thinking about acquiring a Q1 for a good price. I am pretty confident though that once I have weathered it and lit it with Nano LEDs that it will look fantastic.
To be honest these days it's slim pickings on Ebay here in Australia and with the new NETFLIX TAX of 10% going on top of the already high 9.9% fee buying and selling on Ebay is not going to be a worthwhile proposition anymore.

Looking forward to seeing how this one comes out Steve. Make sure you let us have pictures of it "fixed" before the weathering goes on.

I will do that. I am about to have three days off so will be able to get quite a bit done.
