Many thanks for the kind words gents.

And so we move on to the finished article - fast forward a couple of years or so and I went along to Warren Haywood's house to see how the professionals paint and line. I had a few goes on some coaches and NPCS and then took the plunge and lined Severn

I am not so sure that it would have been quite so fully lined out by Colonel Stephens but I had fun doing it.

Great job Rob, not so sure my hands would be steady enough to even get close to that!
    Well done that man!

    Thanks Ron,
Thankfully on this one most of the lining was done either using a template (for the lozenge shape on the tank sides) or using bow compasses to follow an edge.
As with anything ideally you need to practice on something first before starting to line the model. I have a couple of sheets of thick brass which used to be name plates on doors in a building that we refurbished a few years ago at work that I have painted with a rattle can to practice on. Empty can and the lids off glass jars also make good things to practice on before taking the plunge.

I have just read the entire thread Rob and all I can say is that the Colonel built some strange half cab locomotives, but I also have to say that you have built a cracker of a model. The colour is fantastic and you have done well with the lining. If I had to line the loco, I would have cheated and opted for red decal sheet and cut thin lines and applied..., then thought long and hard about the eliptical lines and round corners...

Great thread, great model. Thanks for sharing this.:thumbs::thumbs:

    Cheers, Gary.

    Thanks Gary,

I am not so sure that the Colonel built them so much as bought anything that was going cheap. - According to The Colonel Stephens Museum it was sold out of service for £47 in 1930

I think many astute businessmen who needed loco's and/or rolling stock did the same Rob. I live close to where the Ashover Light Railway ran, and as I understand it, much of the loco's and rolling stock was bought as 'war surplus' after WW1 by the Clay Cross Company to bring limestone from the Butts quarry at Ashover back to the Company's blast furnaces at Clay Cross. What the Directors didn't expect was that the Government of the day insisted that they carry passengers too, so rudimentary 'carriages' had to be bought/cobbled together. Unfortunately, not long afterwards, enterprising local small bus companies set up routes in opposition to the railway, and passenger numbers slowly dwindled away!
    Keith.
