    I think a bit of an introduction is in order. I'm a youngish modeller who has a fascination with steam. This put me on track to modelling originally the LNER, but later the British Railways North-Eastern region. This at the moment is my grand project, a L-shaped layout point-to-point layout. One side, the 11 foot side has a 4 track fiddle yard at the back with am extension of the main yard on the front. The 12 foot side has the rest of the layout. It is actually based on a fictitious direct line from Middlesborouh to York. The station of Stanmore Hill is on the York end, where the line goes from double track to single track. Since this premise has been used it allows me to have a larger engine shed then normally Allocated to a station this size. It is DC however if I could if the funds it could be converted to DCC. I have gathered a rather large collection of engines, mostly ex-LNER but a few from each region as well. A trackplan is attached which shows the whole plan. Pictures will be posted at a later date. It is still yet to have most the scenery done to it but all the track and some buildings have been put down.Thanks, Loch EDIT: Actually I just realised that this is the final version of the trackplan that includes the second siding in the top left corner. This is still yet to be built.

    Here's the pictures promised. And actually does anyone know how to add tension lock couplers to an airfix lowmac and an airfix 15 ton crane. Thanks, Loch

    Great looking layout Loch, plenty of operational interest. :thumbs:

    As for your Lowmac, which of the three widths of the tension lock couplers are you using, or intending to use ??

    My option for fitting tension locks would be to cut out an area within the buffer mounting plate that bridges the buffers and glue in a piece of 20 thou or 30 thou styrene. Then you can either Araldyte (epoxy glue) or super glue a tension lock onto this styrene.

    G`day Loch,
    Coupler height is your critical measurement.
    I would go with Gary`s suggestion provided you can accurately measure / establish the height and therefore the correct thickness of styrene to fit.
    I have added tension locks ( mini Bachmanns ) to wagons and used plastic spacers to approximate the height required. I drill into the spacer so that the tension lock can be screwed into place. The plastic spacer is either at correct height or too thin, which means the coupler will sit too high. The height can be adjusted with thin washers between the coupler and the plastic spacer if required, to bring it down to correct height.
    I hope that makes sense.????

    Nice picture. Loads going on there. Let me know how you are getting on with multiple picture uploading. If you are still having bother, we'll see if a clearer explanation can be given.

    I can't upload from my IPad but my PC is easy once you get the hang of it.

    Hi Loch

    For coupling height, I use a piece of thin double sided tape to temporarily hold the coupling and packing materials in place, and adjust the amount of packing until the coupling is just above the coupling height (to allow for two thicknesses of tape). Then remove the tape and glue it all together.

    I use Kadee couplings now, so have a height gauge, for tension locks, pick a wagon, and mark which end you are going to use as the reference, and use this wagaon to set all other couplings to.

    Ok These are the rest of the picture promised. Please excuse the horrible quality as these were taken on my phone while my camera is being fixed.1. A view of the engine shed.2. A view of the extension, all this area is going to be serving industry.3. 63601 on shed at the coal staithes 4. 65445 departing the industrial branch with a full train.5. A view of the signal box, a Hornby LMS one.6. A view of the headshunt, the station pilot is on break.7. A good view of the engine shed, a ratio crane is going to be installed here in the near future.8. A view of the station, goods shed and the tunnel portal towards York.9. A view of the train heading towards Middlesbrough.

    Hi Loch, I built a few of those dapol / airfix lowmacs and I have to say they have ended up being static items on the layout. When I did manage to get tension locks installed I found that I couldn't get them to run very well at all around my layout. They just kept derailing, even with lead weight to stabilize them.
    What I did manage to do was get hold of some Hornby ones and they are really good.Here are a few pics of mine.Cheers Steve (Also in Sydney)

    Nice shots of the loaded low macs. I have a couple of O gauge versions to build yet. Great wagons for posing. :thumbs:
