These are now in stock again at Taffvale. Both etches and castings. I've just ordered one so it should be up in the next couple of days. I'll post up a picture when it arrives. cheers toto
As promised ..... here is what you get. note that the wheels as usual are a separate purchase. first ........ the opening of the box ....... next up ........ the main frets ...... and next ........ Buffers and rods etc ...... and then ...... the two tanks ( well one photographed but there are two ). and ........... the dreaded white metal bits and bobs ..... then the separately purchased wheels ( given at RRP less 5% ) and then ...... the obligatory parts list and destructions ....... and that as they say ...... is your lot. i have had a quick look at the instructions and at first glance it looks reasonably straight forward. A few footery little bits but the main build is reasonable size pieces to work with. Quite pleased with it. haven't thought of what its purpose will be yet but thats just a technicality. I ordered up another couple of BR standard brake vans from Jim today as well taking my tally to 3 standard brakes and a 20 ton toad. I'll need a few brake vans for Luib Bridge. Picked up another Loco tender truck whilst I was at it. Once the first BR brake van is done ( ongoing at the moment ) I'll either do another one hot on its heels or try a tender truck. they will both form part of my maintenance train anyway. cheers toto
I see they come in a box these days, mine was on a card in a similar manner to Jim's kit's It's a good kit you will enjoy it. I can't recall any gotcha's either. Besides the 3 tank version that I have to build, I also have a WEP (now with Walsall Model Industries) 7 tank Cordon Gas Tank wagon to build. THE NER picked up some that were built for the ROD in WWI after the war and they were subsequently absorbed into the LNER. - I do like tank wagons....
Hi Rob, it does look reasonably straight forward. as I said, one or two small bits as with most kits and the tank hold down straps with the hooks etc but apart from that, they look like decent parts to work with and loads of locating tabs etc. I will be attempting a few builds over the winter so you never know. I'm trying to stick to items that will make up my maintenance rake so the tank wagon is not really on the list. Its going to be my six wheel coach and a couple of lowfits and a small crane wagon. a good variety of wagons. cheers toto.
Are the lowfits Jim's? Your mention of crane wagon reminds me that I should finish mine I have a pair that go with one of the Meteor models cranes and all they need is buffers and toolboxes making up. They are not included but I plan to makes them from coffee stirrers. I got as far as sticking some stirrers edge to edge but no further.
Hi Rob, yes, the lowfits are Jims. One of them came as part of a two wagon Gladiator kit, the other wagon being with a fitted crane. I purchased that at telford this year. ( the boys made me buy it honest )
That's a new one on me I didn't realise that Gladiator marketed anything of Jim's. I will pay more attention when I am at the next show that Gladiator attend.
Sorry, maybe wasn't too clear there. I have lowfits of jims and I also have a " set " from Gladiator of their own lowfit and a crane mounted version as well. Its in the Kit section if my memory serves me correctly. cheers toto
I'm thinking that this could become my next project on completion of the BR 12 ton wagon currently on the bench. Does not look like there is any great difficulty with this ...... famous last words. Watch this space....... Toto
I really enjoyed building mine, so much so that I got a second one complete with a third tank to build a triple tank version at some point.
I cant find mine. the search will resume tomorrow. I will fit the other two buffers and all eight stnchions ( 4 either end ) then call it a day until I get my gauge from Paul to help get the wheels and W irons aligned accurately. They are in the post on their way. It looks like I may actually get this one finished ....... Hoooool. I'm full of enthusiasm as although the white metal has not been without its issues, I have managed better that expected so rather than spend my time e doing nothing whilst I await my gauge, I'll start another kit. Roll on tomorrow. Cheers Toto
Found it ....... hiding in the darkest corners of oblivion ....... ha ha ...... no escape. trembling in its frets it was ....... this will probably be next up once I finish the loco tender build. you can look for this being started over the next few days. I've officially been furloughed as of an email I received about an hour ago ....... looks like another month of modelling ..... hooray ..... erm I mean .... oh drat. cheers toto
If you need it, my build starts here A couple of gotcha's that I can remember are the overlays that represent the riveted sections which go on over the tank barrels, need careful placing to ensure that they cover the etched lines that tell you where to put them. The other was the whitemetal horse hooks which dissapeared into a blob almost before I went near them with the soldering iron. Oddly in another of the Celtic connection NBR kits (Avery tool van) there were some really nice lost wax castings for the same horse hooks so I was surprised that they were not included in brass but never got around to asking Chris Basten (who had the range at the time).
Thanks for the warning Rob. I'll have a look through your build as well. I'm sure it will be a great assistance. Cheers Toto
