Has anyone tried a TTS Diesel Chip in a DMU model?

If so, what chip did you fit to what model?

Were you happy with the sound?
If not what was wrong with it?

    Many thanks
    Paul

Not something I’d consider as totally different engines (ie there may be two per car, so a two car unit may have 4 engines running.) and then there are the other sound effects such as the buzzers between guard and driver to signal to start..

If I were doing a DMU, I’d pay the little extra and have a properly recorded/blown sound chip myself.

    Hey Andy,
Please tell me where you get properly recorded/blown sound chips for a little extra on the cost of a TTS chip?

You might have a point if all I needed was one DMU for a "one engine in steam" branch line, but for my mainline and branch junction, I need several.
As several trains in a mixture of Locos and DMUs are on the go and/or ticking over at the same place, at the same time, I am not sure I need that fidelity?

I also remember what early recordings from the 1960s were like!

    Best regards
    Paul

    How about these

    Train-Tech Sound effect capsules

SFX50 Diesel Multiple unit - including changes, door slams, horn - listed in the future products, but may be worth a look at

Not sure these are what Andy had in mind, but yes, worth investigating.

However, as the sound is generic, one DMU or loco would sound like another?
Could save some money by having a couple of units fitted with these, and a couple of locos fitted with the loco units. Would have to timetable so that the pairs don't appear on scene together.
Would still have to buy full price chips for the rest of the DMUs and locos that there is not a TTs for.

    Cheers

Well before we had TTS you either had the full price or ran silent.

They aren’t what I was considering. I came across someone at the NEC a few years ago who did sound only decoders for around £30 (ie you kept your original decoder) but can’t for the life of me find the link to who it was. Went back to buy one and he had sold the last one.

    May have been soundtraxx?

Thanks Andy and Paul for the info on the Digitrax 8 sound chips.
However when I look on the Costaldcc web site, it says:-
Preloaded with selectable steam and diesel Sound Schemes.

So this sounds like a Generic sound, which for £43 plus the cost of a standard chip for an unfitted loco!

So the choices seem to be if you want sound:-
    a) Full price sound chip £95-120 depending on the facilities and loco/unit you want.
    b) TTS and accept only 2 functions simultaniously. (but I don't see on a regular basis, particularly with steam wanting more?), and fit some locos with less than perfect match (e.g:- fit Britannia chip in a 75xxx standard?).
    c) Accept Generic sounds.

So I think I will be going for a mixture of a) and b) with a0 on locos that are going to spend lot of time in the vi. I will hold

    Sorry all,
My internet took a dive, so my reply above should have read:-

Thanks Andy and Paul for the info on the Digitrax 8 sound chips.

However when I look on the Costaldcc web site, it says:-
Preloaded with selectable steam and diesel Sound Schemes.

So this sounds like a Generic sound, for £43 plus the cost of a standard chip for an unfitted loco!

The visible part of my layout, which runs in steam/diesel transition era and modern era, does not include a loco shed or station , but does include up and down loops, a few sidings, and a branch junction.

So the choices seem to be if I want sound:-
    a) Full price sound chip £95-120 price depending on the facilities and loco/unit you want.
    b) TTS and accept only 2 functions simultaneously. (but I don't see on a regular basis, particularly with steam wanting more?), and fit some locos with less than perfect match (e.g.:- fit Britannia chip in a 75xxx standard?).
    c) Accept Generic sounds. (I don't think this is an option I want to consider!)

So I think I will be going for a mixture of a) and b) with a) on locos/units that are going to spend lot of time in the visible part of the layout and b) on locos/units "just passing through" (where a right match or a match I can live with exists!). I will also look again at the "just passing through" locos/units and decide if I really need sound in all of them.
I will hold off a number of a) fits until I see what additions to TTS are in the 2020 Hornby range. I won't have funds for too many in the next three months anyway!!

It seems to me that one of the key factors to matching a particular TTS chips to other locos/units is the similarity of the whistles/horns. So some investigation there required I think!

    Cheers
    Paul
