    Two small but essential features.

    Sand Drying House

Dry sand is required for use in the sanding gear of locomotives to aid adhesion on slippery rails, and seeing as this is in the damp UK and the grades of my branches are steep the sand drying facility required is quite large considering the size of this service area.

I found that it was very difficult to obtain any images or information on sand drying facilities of 1960s British Railways, what little I did find was that it was an indistinct part of the sheds, so as with my cement works I looked for a plausible alternative.

What I have here is a European kit (Kibri 39418 H0 Sand store Rheine, building only) of relatively modern design which I have reworked to look more British Victorian, which included converting the windows to look like sash windows and modifying the chimney stack of the workers stove chimney to have a suitable style pot.

The roof covering has been made to look like it is felted and the whole item repainted in the local livery. Some fine sand tops off the bunker with spillage from the shovelling of sand from wagons when it arrives.

    Lamp Oil Hut

The ubiquitous Peco model provides the lamps and oil used on the locos and brake vans operating out of this service area.

    Next, diesel oil.
