G'day micr00man, Welcome aboard from Sydney. Settle in, have a good look around, read up, but most of all, enjoy yourself. If you have any questions, just ask. Plenty of good modellers here for you to pick their brains. Looking forward to reading about your own modelling and what's on your work bench. Enjoy the banter that is P1MRC. Cheers, Gary.
Hi micr00man from sunny hot Spain settle in grab a brew and enjoy the trip and join in when your ready Ian vt
Many thanks for your welcome messages! I only found your site this morning, after watching a few of Gormo's excellent 'How to' vids. I'm a complete novice at modelling, having just returned to the 'sport' after an 00 sized gap of 35 years (am guessing I'm not the only one), and my interest is mainly driven by one of my grandchildren. So, I have time, reasonable dexterity, life-skills etc plus a background in art/design, but very little space in our small home. So far, I have a 6ft x 4ft 6ins ply reinforced baseboard attached to strong pulleys suspended from the spare room ceiling, tressles to stand it on, and want to build a complex layout with minimum two levels - as lightweight as possible. I'm also a great re-user so will be trying to make/restore/alter virtually everything myself, including remote/manual point op etc, from what I have here. All track so far is either Peco or Hornby set-track, and stock is Ebay DC stuff to keep cost down. I'm still at layout planning stage, so any suggestions, ideas, layout plans/Scarm designs which include continuous running and especially a north-west English townscape theme would be very helpful. No more cos I'm hearing the yawns......but hop some of you guys sympathise!
from a wind blown East Midlands. You could try downloading Anyrail 6 it's free and used by many folk on this forum.
Hi Micr00man, great to see you diving in. I think you will have come to the right place. you are right in the fact that there are many born again modellers on board here so you are keeping good company. I'm sure suggestions will start to flow with reference to layout idea's etc Just let things warm up a bit. What sort of era were you thinking about. Maybe some examples of what you have gathered so far in terms of loco's etc may help people identify the kind of layout you have in mind. Any specific industries or passenger types etc. I'm sure your layout will start to sprout shoots in no time. I like the suspended idea as well. A great space saver that. again, thanks for posting and I'm sure we'll be chewing the fat before long. cheers toto
1930s, LMS, urban detail, Crewlisle-like but simpler. So far, a Jubilee, a Jinty and an ex Caledonian 264 Pug, some old clerestories and a load of assorted coal wagons............Thanks too Ron, I've got Anyrail6 and Scarm, but it's sensible running I'm struggling with! Any help?
& MicroOOman to Platform1 Great intro and as you have seen Gormo video series is a great way of learning the in's and out's of the hobby Looking forward to seeing your small empire expand. Lots of knowlage within the forum member base. So jump on in and get involved Again
and a warm from Dundee. Have a look at foam insulation board (the pink stuff is pretty good), you can build up layers, is very light and easy to sculpt into the formations and levels you want. The layers can be easily stuck together with the quick grabbing tube glues available from most DIY stores. You may find this interesting https://youtu.be/Mpko5rxM9pI Once again welcome to the forum Paul
Thanks for the suggestion, reckon the first thing I'll have to make will be a hot wire Cutter! I've a small spare hornby controller somewhere...anyway, will get a sheet next week and have a play!
Mind and do a post on how you make yours. Gormo has done a good post on the same but its always good to see the various contraptions that people make. the foam structures will help keep the weight down tremendously. great stuff. cheers toto
Hi Micr00man, welcome onboard . Brilliant intro, you will get some great advice on here for layout suggestions, a figure 8 doubled back on itself would give a decent running length but the inclines may be a bit steep in 6 ft to get 2 layers? Anyway I am certain some one will have some great ideas! Cheer's, Pete.
Thanks Pete, was thinking along the same lines, but reckon I will have to stick to 2 layers, otherwise I'll lose headroom! Got a hot wire cutter half made now so will figure a way to cut accurate ramps with it - maybe clever clamping of wooden guides? Having lots of fun anyway! Tee hee Will do an update, success or otherwise!
