Gloria emailed me earlier explaining that she has a GWR 2 - 6 -4 prairie which is chipped for DCC but unfortunately is not working. She is after some suggestions on what could be wrong. I've suggested that she gives us a little more information about it to see if anyone can advise.

Starting with if it came chipped or if she chipped it herself. If it was previously. DC model, did it run ok on DC prior to chipping etc.

Pop on Gloria and feed the guys with some info and I'm sure we can help get to the bottom of it.

Many thanks again for popping aboard Platform1. It's a friendly place to be. http://www.click

    Cheers

    Hi Gloria,

Welcome to the forum.......nice to have a lady on board and a GWR fan at that. !!!!....There are some on here that blindly follow other railway companies because they just haven`t realized how good the GWR was.......unlike your good self and me and thousands of others.

As you can see the banter has started already.........there is no malice on this forum and for that matter, it won`t be tolerated.......so come and join with us in this friendly and hospitable atmosphere.

I can`t help you with your chip issues but there will be some who can so just ask the question and answers will be forthcoming I`m sure.

Hi Gloria - I'll correct our beloved flounder for you, a Prarie is a 2-6-2.

As Toto has said any info you have will help, did it come fitted with a chip or have you fitted it yourself, and if so did it work on DC before.

    Hi Gloria
Another warm welcome aboard from Sydney.
GWR is OK, even for me as an LNER fan. I still have GWR locomotives grace my tracks and I am sure Gresley would approve.
I am also looking to how Toto has modified his Prarie.

Hi everyone thank you ever so much for the very warm welcome. The locomotive that I have problems with as mentioned is a 2-6-2 GWR Prairie. I bought it from a well known trading site, the chip was already fitted, that's the reason why I bought it, I am not sure what chip it is though sorry to say.
Also I didn't realise there were so many model railway enthusiasts in Australia.
I am a UK Country girl and live in a village now, so really there is nobody local to me that maybe able to help me. Which is a shame as the nearest model shop is 18 miles from where I live, but sadly do not repair locomotives as they just sell them.
Also to mention I am a member on another railway model site but I think they are not keen on lady modellers, as I seem to know a lot more about railways than a lot of them which I don't wish to dwell on.
Anyway once again thank you all ever so much for your lovely welcome.
    Gloria.

Nice to have you Join Gloria
What Comand station do you have ??
Have you tried to program it on the program track ?
Ie try programming it to a number of your choice
If so dose the motor pulse when you program
Or depending on your Comand station you can request to read a CV and you should have the motor pulse same as when programming.

Possible issues if the motor doesn't pulse "pick up issues" no signal getting to the Decoder.

Wireing issues, break, poor solder joint.

Motor issue decoders need to see a resistance value across a motor or they won't respond could be wiring, worn motor, failed motor.

    Failed decoder.

I often get models in for repair "just purchased" from eBay as DCC fitted and "working" on X number, to find failed decoders or if the decoder is OK it's set to a different number than stated or on the loco side.
The other thing people often get caught with is trying to run on DC and the decoder has been set to DCC only will present as non working.
Needs to be set in the CV's CV 29, if you need to run on DC

Best of luck let us know how you go with the diagnostics

    Hi Gloria

Glad you feel welcome, and don't worry about knowing more than me about railways, I start from a very low level, so most people know more than me, but I get my own back in other areas :avatar:.

Regarding your DCC problem, which Digitrax system is it that you have, and as Chris asked have you got a programming track setup, and tried to read the values. Make sure the wheels, pickups and track are all clean.
You may find it easier to remove the body and look at the dcc decoder - post a picture(s) to help us try and help.

    Hi Paul,
Sorry if I haven't answered everyone's questions I am gradually getting around to doing that. I believe I sent an email to you regarding my signalling problems also to say what Digitrax controller we are using. I am very confused about CVs whatever that is as my knowledge of DCC is not brilliant. The only reason I have DCC is that a few years ago Hornby brought out the Zero One and Airfix brought one out as well. But reading from members on other forums and how good the system is thought I would try again.
But for me it still quite complicated as I am trying to learn as times goes on.
    My kindest regards,
    Gloria.

    Hi Chris,
Sorry I haven't replied until now. Thank you for your very warm welcome. I am trying to get to grips with the site and peoples answers to my questions.
I am trying to sort the 2-6-2 Prairie out have got the body off my partner rewired the decoder as the soldering and wiring was a lot to be desired from the person I bought it from. The motor wants to run then stops. We are not sure what is wrong with I have re programmed it to its running no of 6100. but still not running.
But will try and find someone to help me, if I can.
    My kindest and best regards,
    Gloria.

I have a mix of different locos but mostly GWR.
