and to the forum Paul. We are being inundated with Paul's these days a very popular name indeed. Anyway, have a good look around and when you are settled, feel free to jump in. I hope you enjoy your stay with us. Cheers for now Toto
Hi there Paul and a warm to the forum from East Yorkshire, hope you enjoy your stay here amongst a whole group of members also named Paul. cheers York Paul
Thanks for the warm welcome. Modelling wise I'm just looking at getting back into railway modelling after a 10 year absence In that time I've mostly been building military models. I have a 1/48 u boat on the go currently. Railway wise I have an acme rebuilt west country kit stashed away and have just ordered an ACE j69 kit.
Paul, and a warm from Dundee. Great to have you onboard, and look forward to seeing the progress on the West Country and J69 builds. Paul
All sounds good. Mind and post up posts on the kits and kit building section with some photos of the kits to let folks see what the kit consists of. Always nice to see. Cheers Toto
I will do. I believe William at ACE is struggling for supplies due to the current situation, so I have not received the j69 kit yet. The west country is in storage but will get my hands on it soon. It's a typical jim harris design. I need to stock up on supplies and tools as I'm only just getting back into it so it my be a while before I build anything
Interesting and thanks for the update on the West Country kit Paul, I know Pat Ennis has some while back now updated the Jim Harris Merchant Navy kit which I am seriously tempted to buy for a rainy day, maybe he has the West Country kit copywrite as well... I shall have to ask him. cheers York Paul
The west country was still available from acme until relatively recently. Looking at the acme website it apears the toolings are actually for sale for all acme kits. The one I have is the rebuilt version. It actually has the same chassis etch as the air smoothed west country which ended up as the meteor kit. The air smoothed one is now available from ace as a special order. This kit lineage is very confusing
I think I'm safe in saying that ACME are total history now. I had contacted them showing interest in a couple of their range and the owner was down to having some remaining etches that he could maybe cobble together a complete kit from. I'm assuming the copyright to his kits have now all changed hands. Not 100% sure. I have a couple of ACME kits and as a collection of parts, they look ok. How they will go together I dont know but I dont think they are as questionable as some may make out. Just my opinion of course and could be proved very wrong. Cheers Toto
The etches on the ACME kit for the Ivatt 2 tank I built last year were reasonably passable, a little thin maybe but they did fit together nicely. The issue was that parts had been drawn incorrectly and other aspects could have been better thought out in my opinion. The main area of concern was the cylinder block being way over width and the front frames spaced too close together... both required scratch replacement. I believe from discussion I had with Peter Cross that my kit was a pre production one and not the final College Models version so I can only speak from this one experience with ACME. Given time and the inclusion of many replacement parts to upgrade this was the result... since then the radius rod and return crank have been fitted.
That looks excellent. I believe the west country I have has its cylinders set too wide too. It could be for crank pin clearance on the front axle. I will have to find the notes someone sent me from they're build to be sure. Jim harris admits himself in the instructions that my west country was designed as an aid to scratchbuilding. There are no formers for the boiler and firebox. Strangely he didnt make the bulkheads for the tender curved as the prototype. This means that the the tender sides would be straight if made as per the kit when they should be curved. He acknowledges this in the instructions and suggests filling with solder.
Hello and welcome to the forum Paul. I have a couple of J69 tanks I'm building, the one I have started is, I believe is an Ace kit though I got it without any instructions or packaging. The other is a Connoisseur easy build kit from a few years ago. Also without packaging but with instructions. Both kits have some bits missing, but the Ace came with Premier Components frames and coupling rods thankfully! I have been doing a build on here but haven't uploaded anything lately as I keep getting sidetracked . Cheers, Pete.
Ah yes I have seen your post . I ordered some premier coupling rods for the j69 and they arrived last week. I may go back for the frames depending on what the ace ones are like. I have built a few of big Jim's kits in the past but the ace kit being half the price swung it in they're favour. I know it will be tougher to build but my budget is quite small
