Just as a comparison, here are the four wagons showing their “wooden” decks.

    From top to bottom:-

MMP brass kit with Poppy’s wood flooring - Lifecolor weathered wood
Parkside plastic kit Acrylic paints, my selection of browns, greys and a black wash.
Connoisseur Models Brass kit, grey acrylic primer then my above selection of browns and grey, plus a black wash
Welcome wagons with Poppy’s wood flooring- Lifecolor weathered wood.

The set I use, but using similar colours either Acrylic or thinned down enamels will produce the same effects

I like the inserts that come with some of these kits, would I buy an insert to put in a built wagon, probably not as with a bit of practice a reasonable wood effect can be added to any primed surface, be it plastic or brass.

Lovely weathering effects of the wagon decks Kim, when we used to shunt out rakes of BDO, BDV, BCV BEV and later BDA trollies you would often find weeds growing inside the edges of the wagon deck, Rosebay Willowherb and Ragwort were usual along with copious amounts of other rubbish such as old shoes and torn overalls. Rusty oil cans and lengths of rotting rope were another hazard to watch out for. You'd find the same on pretty much all common user open wagons allocated to circuit working.

    Cheers Toto, Paul.

Another step closer to finishing this build off, decals went on today, then sealed ready for some final weathering. Load has had another coat of rust effect as well.

and while I’ve been doing this one I thought I might as well get one of Jims finished off with decals and a load. Again sealed and ready for final weathering to blend it all together.

The double bolster wagon needs a load so while I’m doing the other I thought I’d try some thing different (on my layout , that is) a scrap load of girders.
So taking some large plastic “H” section, which in fact were the off cuts from the bogie bolster A load, I painted them with a mix of rusty browns, oranges and some dark brown / black. Now I deliberately dabbed paint on leaving lumps of paint. Left over night to dry I then sealed them with 2 coats of varnish. Next paint the beams your desired colour, light grey in this case, and you end up with this.

you can see the lumps, so now the fun begins, using a blade, small wire brush, a screw driver , start to scratch, pull, drag these tools across the beam and watch the magic begin...

add some water to the beam will soften the grey acrylic paint and large pieces of the grey paint will be removed, go easy.

Now why not add some pipes, wires, bolt holes, twist an edge with pliers to make a dent etc etc

add some dry brushing, paint any fittings, pipes , duffa’s and what’s-it’s and add to your wagon. I’ve used rusted chain with slaters pre assembled load hooks.

Like the 'doctored' motor commutator Kim, makes for an unusual load!

    Cheers Paul.
I need to work on the back scene a bit, some of the buildings are showing their age a bit to much.

Much like many of the buildings and warehouses in the Wolverhampton, Cradley Heath, Bilston, Walsall and Dudley areas then. :avatar:

    Correct,
I was based in Walsall for 11 years working mainly around Aldridge , Tipton, Bloxwich , Walsall and parts of Streetly, lots of nice grimy industrial areas with lots of canals to look at. Frequent trips in to Birmingham, Duddeston mill area and the main stores at Lord Street (hence my layouts name) gave me plenty of inspiration to model the grimy grotty infrastructures.
