So in the age we live in where toucan buy any various locomotive in some form or another is there many of us left that like a good kit bash or scratch build I'm currently converting an old airfix 0-6-0 austerity in to a runner from a static kit but who still does this or would you just buy an RTR model?

I bash quite a lot of kits. Sometimes it takes a while and sometimes nothing comes of it but it is fun. I also try and make a silk purse out of some other persons left offs or battered kits. That is also enjoyable. I have several on the go at the moment including 3 x O gauge Scotsmans, an O gauge Mallard, and O gauge 0-4-0 shunter and about ten 00 locos. There are wagons and coaches too when I find the time.

I have also got an Airfix J94 kit to build up. I am using the original plastic chassis with top hats in the wheel holes, fitted with Romfords and coupling rods made from rail. It should work allright.

Since I've come back to the hobby, I must admit my stock is predominately RTR, I used to model (or at least tried to) model in P4, so everything had to be modified in some way.
Most of my recent bashing has been of card kits, but O gauge is beckoning and I can see a bit o bashing taking place then.

Power to the knife and file

I like kit-building and kit-bashing, although I'm less into scratch-building. I do make a few little detailing bits myself, within my own limitations.

Recent projects include several Cambrian wagon kits, with two more on the way, a kit-bash of three Parkside kits into one SECR 6-wheel brake van, several bus kits, and some coach conversions using old Triang/Hornby underframes and comet brass sides. There are also the vinyl overlays on a class 350/1 to convert it to a 450, with a couple of bits removed to suit, and some Golden Arrow Productions locomotive kits using modified proprietary chassis, and simpler hacks like fitting lights to Hogwarts Castle (which subsequently had more major surgery to fit a newer, better running chassis).

Then there have been some EMU kits for SR and LT units too. I have been tending to fit Hornby 2 BIL running chassis into Ayjay kit bodies. The 'tin' 2 HAL and 2 HAP units used the complete 2 BIL running units, while the 4 SUB used only the motor coach chassis. With the Harrow and Radley LT units, I use Black Beetle motor bogies, which involves a little hacking as they are taller than the intended Tenshodo SPUD motor bogies.

Quite a few of these things are still underway - sometimes I think I bite off more than I can chew, not so much in my abilities to do these projects, but more in my taking on too many things at once!

I haven't kit bashed a loco or wagon for quite some time, but Scalescenes kits I do like to bash about. Would you believe me that my low relief Parcel Depot started life as the Scalescenes Large Station Kit...?

Not attempted a loco kit yet but am considering an Airfix railbus conversion ... however I have built a few Airfix wagon kits and most of my buildings are kit bashed using a combination of Lcut and Scalescene products.[size=

This "B" Wagon started as a Parkside kit that I expanded the loading gauge on, cut and shut adding sections to make up to the larger Australian dimensions for a very similar truck.
Then scratch built the braking system to the Aus style and made it work when you turn the brake Handel
Scale timber floor etc.

I still kit build/bash most of the time as early Edwardian stuff isn't really available RTR, I think the only items I have that are is a few Tri-ang clerestories that are being altered anyway.

Currently though I am scratch-building a small 4-wheel all third that was absorbed into the GWR for use on the Culm Valley branch.

A picture to show state of play.

A few models that I didn't kit bash, but scratch built, that I have overlooked for the last year or two, or is it longer now ?? :scratchchin:

I like to model with styrene, although from my previous post above, you probably wouldn't think so. So here are a few picks of some of my scratch building that I took from plans obtained from Network Rail Archives...

Callington Station signal box (ground frame)... named Kelly Bray. This is a mix of styrene, scale timber sections and corrugated card.

Callington Goods Shed.... a mix of corrugated card and styrene.

Callington Engine Shed... embossed styrene, styrene (frame) and corrugated card cladding. This model needs completing.

Callington Station.... styrene frame covered in corrugated card cladding.

Callington Goods/Provender Store - based on a Southern Railways precast concrete store. Styrene frame walls, styrene posts (footings) and corrugated card roof.

This model was built using dimensions supplied by a chap on RMweb, which he measured up for me !

Cheers, Gary.

Very impressive Gary, although the flowers look a little over size.
