An update on this loco for york paul who is considering one. i've opened the kit up and taken a few more photos. A couple of things ....... originally I thought the tender etches were missing ..... well ..... they aren't. So ..... I scored a tender albeit the one supplied leaves a little to be desired.

    anyway ..... onwards.....

The rolled brass boiler. A little on the thin side but not as bad as I first thought after looking at it again .....

motion brackets in nickle siver and thick stuff. ... ok...

loco chassis in nickle silver and again ..... pretty thick stuff .... ok .....

Now things start to change a bit .....

first of the brass etches. a little on the thin side ..... not the best seem a bit .... erm .... dunno. I think they'll be alright but just not great.

tender parts ..... thin, not a lot of detail ..... if I never had a better spare, I'd build it but would not expect to much from it.

more of the tender ..... same story. useable but not the most enticing.

body etches, alright .... not as thin as I thought and probably will make up into the kit as intended but just a bit lacking.

overall thoughts .... Mmmmm for £179.00 ... I suppose its ok. the tender is more of a disappointment as its not immediately convincing. The pre-rolled boiler a little thin but I can accept that. The smoke box is a build in affair and to be honest, the whole etch is a bit rough and questionable. A decent builder could probably make something of it.

not sure .... the jury is still out on this one.

    cheers toto

Thanks for the update appraisal on this one, my take on it is for £179 it is what it is and one cannot expect any more. True an easyish looking build for team effort in group building projects but the outcome will stand or fall on those thin etches I'd say, I think we need to consider this one further before jumping in... what is the motion parts like ? I ask because replacing bits like that and also dodgy castings will make for an expensive engine in the long run and it may be better to consider something else, I mean stick another £100 on the budget (which would be the minimum outlay for replacement quality parts anyway) and there is the equivalent of a better kit with less grief. I really don't want more hassle after that ACME Ivatt build which did ultimately turned out to be a superb model... and so it should have for its total cost which involved chucking nearly half the original kit content in the dustbin was an absolute loss leader. Maybe we should revisit Scorpio and check out another BR Standard Class 3 tank ? After all that one comes in well inside budget and is a cracking build... what do you think Toto.

I would agree. Scorpio could be worth more consideration. The tender on this does not inspire and the boiler just looks a bit naff. For another 40 quid with scorpio, I think we would be getting a far better kit, more in terms of the base etches. I can accept that maybe rodding and casts may be better being replaced as long as the etched sheets are reasonable quality.

Did you post up the scorpio parts before the build ? I'd like to see them.

    Cheers

If you haven't made up your mind please, please, please, consider pushing this further down the build list for when you have a few more kits which are not from the ACE stable under your belt.

For York Paul, yes the motion would definitely need replacement if I were to consider one. some of the ACE kits have white metal slide bars and cross heads - My C1 came with them but I bought brass replacements from William.

    Consider it done Rob.

The 4F is next and I'm just lining up the next one. I think this us now dead in the water for now at least.
