Really sets off the bridge nicely, going to look very impressive when the scenery is painted up. So another session of getting plastered then Paul
Started on the river bed 1st layer of plaster bandage, when dry will get a thin skim of plaster of paris to smooth out the lattice effect of the bandage. There will be a slight raising of the river bed at the rear to give a small water fall / rapids - but mainly to stop the resin for the water fall running out the back. And some plaster bandage was also added to the mountain base Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to apply the base coat of slate grey emulsion to the rock faces. Paul
Mr Brunel would be proud of you Paul you've shaved at least a day of his bridge building times. Ian vt
Aye, but he couldn't lift the mountain out of the way, paint it and put it back , he just used the Toto method and kept hitting it until it gave way
Well a full tester pot and 2 hours later, the first coat of slate grey on the mountain A black wash to be applied in the morning, then some high lighting using first the slate grey, then dry brushing with dove grey and a final highlight with silver mist (all tester pots from the Homebase range). Time to contemplate the results through the back of my eye lids (always looks better that way). Paul
I'm with Gary on the ply fascia. The foam would be very vulnerable. I may have enough 3mm stuff that would do the job if you want it.
Aye 3mm ply or cardboard cut to the profile. When I big drilled the end I added a 3mm strip to the big to give a flush fit with the traverser. Time to contemplate the weathering as I sit at the hairdressers waiting for SWMBO - Payback has started
Go with ply or MDF. Cardboard won't last, especially if this will be transported to multiple exhibitions. Cheers, Gary.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but hardboard won't really last too good either if subjected to dampness or wet... maybe a few coats of yacht varnish will help protection.
The black wash was applied last night and a few touch ups this morning before heading off to Perth. Now starting to dry brush the highlights, using Homebase's Dove Grey This will take a while, but is starting to pull out the texture. After that will be adding Iron staining etc. Paul
Heather and gorse will grow from the seams though. They will establish themselves anywhere. There are one or two locations up by Balquidder where you can see trees sprouting virtually horizontally from between rock faces. Metres from any other form of life. Amazing. Same with moss. I could take Paul to a spot along the old Luib branchline ( now lifted ) that you could swear that his location was based on with regards to that rock outcrop. The bridge would be on a smaller scale and slightly further up line but would be otherwise ideal. The only thing missing from Paul's would be a couple of very black and murky Peat bogs. Great stuff.
There you go Toto, I was half right.., anything can happen in Scotland (and it does !) Is Luib located on the A85 between Crianlarich and Killin along the River Dochart ?? Paul, the rock formations are looking good. Looking forward to the continuing saga of this great diorama section. Cheers, Gary.
Yes, I used to have my touring caravan up there for about 7 or 8 years. It was permanently pitched on the old siding platform where the maintenance train was berthed for the workies to work on the line. A beautiful place with some terrific walks. About 2 and a half hours drive from Edinburgh. cheers toto
