    Hi Yorkie,

That's worth a look at. I could insert a little heat shrink over the soldered connection as well just to insulate the connection as a secondary protection measure. :scratchchin: I'll have a play around with that. Thanks

It's worth a go Toto because all you would be doing is making up a spacer from plastic just enough in size to hold the pick up and to hide it behind the wheel rim... glue it in place with Araldite and pop the plunger in and Araldite again from the inside of the frames.

Are these photos of use for any reference?

not an 02 class, but the industrial version - almost identical… with a few small variations..

    Very good Andy,

The cab detail with the levers are of particular use to me.

Also, the light at the front shown centrally above the manufacturers name plate is interesting as my destructions show it mounted on the left of the plate looking towards it. I have already drilled for that but it could be filled in again with a little solder.

Your photos also show the handrail that runs horizontally along the top of the bonnet. ( I have added those ) The model had very small dimples for drilling these although no mention was made or shown in the destructions. Thanks for confirming me suspicions.

Thanks for taking the time to post these up. Much appreciated.

Just noticed another set of handrails not referenced on the kit. They run along below the drivers cab side windows. I'll add these as well.

    Cheers

They didn’t all look the same Toto, some were customised to suit their location. Lots of photos on line.

I was going to ask when you mentioned adding additional hand rails earlier if you were building any particular prototype example?

It's useful to get into the habit of selecting an example that you are going to build and then attempt to find photos of both sides ideally taken in the time period that you are modelling. Not always possible as quite often you find several photos of one side but note the other...

If you keep adding bits you spot in different photos you can end up with a version that never existed.

I remember back in the dark ages when I made aircraft kits I used to add all the weapons that came with the kit. I made a Hurricane with so many under wing bombs and rockets it would never had got airborne.

Ok, back in the shed and some fiddly bits done. Handrails to the rear of the cab and some white metal parts fitted. Tried out the superglue on the small white metal parts and it works a treat.

I have some horses and couplings to fit to complete the buffer beam details and then its white metal brake shoes and crunch time for the pick ups. I think I will risk embarassing myself by attempting the p,hunger pick ups. I'll see it I can get the position for the hole in the chassis anywhere near accurate enough to allow sufficient contact with the back if the tyre.

Here goes nothing. :avatar: pictures to follow.

OK ..... some more pictures of my roughness. :avatar::avatar:

We started off soldering these filler cap thingies ...... or whatever they are.

four of them, each one to the side of the footplate steps. Now .... the space to get in with a soldering iron was non existent ..... so .....

I bored holes straight through the back of each location, soldered a piece of 0.7 brass rod to the back of the piece and threaded it through to allow me to solder them in from behind.

    Job done.

Then these little valve thingies ......

three of them ....... superglued in place.

moving swiftly on to the handrails ......

    soldered into position .......

then onto the electrical pick ups ........ sprung pickups rather than the wiper bronze efforts which to me are not up to the job.

first, i scribed around the wheels to scribe theouter radius and bored a pilot hole....

widened it out to take the plunger ..... but left it a little bit smaller so that the plastic holder had to be forced in tight and leaving it proud enough and tights enough for the brass pickup to make tight contact with the back of the tyre.

soldered two cables, one to each side .......

fed through a hole I drilled in the top of the chassis to allow the cables through to the motor connections ......

    soldered them up .......

and we have a running motor and single axle. I could add pick ups to the other wheels .... to be decided as the two existing seem very reliable.

I still have the connecting rods to do and run in again and also the brake shoes to install which are white metal fittings which are soldered directly to the chassis. Also the air hoses and couplings to the buffer beams but that's no big deal.

Off to mumsie's for Sunday dinner so that's all for now.

    More on that later.

From somebody who gave the impression they didn’t have a clue I reckon you’ve done a brilliant job. More than I could do.

I think I would add more pickups, just one axle is asking for trouble.

I agree, only four wheels picking up is little enough to cope with uneven track and point work at the best of times.

Ok ..... it's a done deal ....... 2 more pickups will be fitted. They were not hard to do.

Now ..... what is the story with " wheel quartering " again when I fit the coupling rods ?

    Brian,

I get along by the seat of my pants. I am getting a bit better but unfortunately no real consistency as yet. I get a little braver as I go but anything can go wrong at any time. My builds are a lot rougher compared to the more seasoned builders on here but you have to start somewhere even if it's at the expense of a kit or two.
:avatar:. This looks like the first kit that I will complete in one sitting. I have a couple of others to get over the line and after this one, will be starting another. I want to build up a head if steam ( excuse the pun ) whilst my mojo has made a return visit.

    Let's hope it continues.

Probably a throw back to the days before Slaters brought out their self quartering wheels.

No worries. Back into the shed tomorrow to get this knocked out ready for painting or at least priming. Hopefully move on to a new build by next weekend. That's the plan anyway. ..... and let's not forget about the hospital projects. plenty to be going at.
