Chesterfield is not Ripley... about 12 miles away. They have a place up near Calow hospital, but never found it.
Hi Richard, Thank you we have had our meeting everything is going along ok at the mo. We are going away early hours of tomorrow morning 4th for a few days going to the 16mm Garden Railway Show and AGM to ask if they can help to fund us to start us off. Hopefully being staying with a freind in Derby then to visit Butterley and talk to some members there. So a busy few days when we come back that's when the hard work starts. Regards, Gloria.
Hi Andy, they are based at the Saint Peter and Paul school on the A632 at the top of Hady Hill just out of town on the way to Bolsover. They meet most Saturdays for track and building maintenance some also bring locos to run. They also have open weekends twice a year, I think in May and September. Its a brilliant place, well worth the visit! Pete.
Pete and I are rather lucky inasmuch as we both live within about 10 miles from a number of railway related sites. We have Barrow Hill Roundhouse, the last surviving operational roundhouse in the UK, Peak Rail, The Ashover Light Railway Society and Pete Watermans place all at Rowsley, the Ecclesbourne Valley railway at Wirksworth, and the light railway at the National Stone Centre near Wirksworth, plus of course the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley near Ripley, a mere 5 miles down the road from my home. Plenty of places of interest there! Keith.
And not going much further (ie another 20 miles) you will have the Churnet Valley Railway, Foxfield, Rudyard lake miniature Railway and the Great Centrals 2 preserved lines. Were quite lucky I suppose here in the East Midlands what we have. ( you could also add in the Battlefield line in Leics, Amerton railway near Stafford and statfold Barm at Tamworth. Going East there is the Nene Valley, All within an hours drive)
Hi everyone, Hope you are enjoying the Easter Break and weather. On Sunday 19th May Roundhouse Factory 16mm Gauge in Doncaster are having their annual open day where they allow the public to wander around the factory floors, with tea and refreshments are provided free of charge, this wil be our 3rd year attending it's well worth a visit and pick up a bargain. Gloria.
Hi Gloria, did you manage to take any photos of your visit? It's rare to see inside a manufacturers premises. Pete.
Hi Pete, No sorry I didn't take any photos last year. I looked at their website earlier they have a video showing there of the 2017 open day. I looked at last years 2018 open day and I am being shown but very briefly at the end with a cuppa in my hand wearing a light blue top. The videos shows models being made and on display. Will try with a gopro this year Pete hopefully fingers crossed, will keep you posted. Regards, Gloria. ,
An update regarding Helston Preservation Group, the meeting took place my partner was present, the main people were not in attendance nothing constructive about building a permanent garden railway so that is all up the air at the moment, as I have been nominated our group Secretary I have to try and write and find ways of communicating with the person in charge of Helston Railway to find out what they want from us as we were promised a piece of ground, which does not seem forthcoming at this moment in time, but we can have a portable building to hold our own meetings. My partner is building a portable garden railway for exhibitions rallies and steam shows, and was told that could be put up on Helston Railway Steam Days. I suppose in some way that's something. Will let you all know more as things progress, as I know a lot of people visit Cornwall during the summer months and visitors do go and visit Hesston Railway. Regards, Gloria
Good morning everyone, Here is my latest update regarding the Helston Railway Preservation Group. All visitors are welcome, with train rides to Truthwall Halt.from Prospidnick calling at Trevarno. This is the line I have worked on pre Beeching Caslte era before it was closed. The Preservation Group are working very hard to restore the line as it was.
