    Hi all.

I managed to make a bit more progress on D804 Avenger.

I gave the body and chassis a good clean ready for painting. Next up was a coat of primer for the chassis.

Primer is always good at showing up gaps or surface finish issues. In this case there was a small gap on the chassis where I added the plasticcard.

A simple job to add some filler.

My next job is to add a coat of primer to the body shell.

    Best regards

    Andrew

    Hi Andrew.
If as stated you intend adding cab lighting, I'd suggest you give the inside of each cab area of the body a couple of coats of black paint before any other lighter finish colours to avoid any chance of light bleed through the body otherwise it might look a bit odd if the cab area glows in the dark. I'd use the SMD type of LED's for the cab lights (and route indicator boards too if you're intending doing these), you can buy these cheaply with leads already soldered on, as otherwise soldering wires onto SMD LED's is not for the faint hearted or inexperienced solderers!:giggle:

    Hi all.

It’s been a busy week with other priorities taking over unfortunately. Still, I managed to do a bit more work on Avenger this weekend.

I painted the yellow panels on the body before masking the area off ready for painting. I also teased out the glazing without breaking it, as my efforts of masking the windows didn’t work.

Then onto a coat of primer for the body. I coated the inside as well, taking onboard Keith’s advice to limit the potential of light bleed when I come to do the cab interior lighting.

I hope to start on the loco green colour scheme in the next few days.

    All the best, Andrew.

Avenger is starting to look the part now, quite amazing how even a prime coat moves the work to the next level, there is a lot of time consuming work you've done just in the primer process and like yourself this last week has been full of other commitments for me too. :tophat::thumbup:

Indeed and I can see that you are really experimental in getting into this project as your high standard of workmanship is evident, if you don't mind me saying but what totally stood out for me was the fact you told us about how masking the glazing didn't deliver what you had hoped for. To me that is always a good sign because it says happy to take risks in the pursuit of a great finish. Lovely stuff Andrew and well delivered mate. :tophat::tophat::tophat::tophat:

    Evening all.

Managed to get my first coat of green onto Avenger tonight. Photos don’t really do it justice under artificial lighting. I think it needs a 2nd coat with the rattle can, but I don’t think it looks too bad.

In between spraying up the chassis and body, I started to paint the buffer beams.

I’m hoping to make more progress with Avenger during the week. I’ll take some photos in natural light outside once the green paint is done.

    All the best.

    Andrew.

    Hi all.

I had a good look at the first coat of green paint on Avenger, not quite happy with the colour.... Doesn’t seem right. It’s difficult to asses against old colour photos of the real class 42 locos, but I’m not sure if the colour is a bit to bright.....

Doesn’t look horrendous, but I’d like to get it as good a match as possible. I’ve got a spray can of Railmatch loco green on order, I’ll test that on a test piece to see if it looks any better.

    Have a good day everyone

    Andrew.

Railmatch Loco Green will look the part on Avenger , the thing to remember is that the colour Loco Green is derived from post war utility paint stocks originally intended for the British Army and Reservist Forces, Land Rover also tapped into this surplus paint mountain for their Series 1 and 2 vehicles. In later times BR adapted Loco Green from the steam engine colour by slightly lightening the tone for diesels, they called this by their own referencing Spec 35 item 55. It is a total misunderstanding that this colour was ever called Brunswick Green indeed it was more akin to Deep Bronze Green which was a later day GWR loco colour. I suspect the Brunswick Green anomaly crept in amongst modelers and enthusiasts stemming from the days of Airfix kits which instructed using a glass pot of Airfix gloss paint to finish the loco model with and like the proverbial wild fire this myth has stuck ever since.

    Hi all.

Things have been quite on the modelling front as I’ve been away on holiday for two weeks in South Wales.

Whilst I was away the railmatch loco green rattle can arrived, so I’ve applied a coat to Avenger. I’m much happier with the results. The photo below was taken after removing the masking tape, Avenger is starting to take shape now.

Next job will be to start detailing the buffer beams and the cab interior.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

    Andrew.

    Hi all.

Some more progress made on Avenger, this time my attention turned to the cab interior.

I found a seated figure from the stash of odds and ends my Dad gave me from my childhood loft layout. A bit of dark blue paint and not looking too bad. The unfortunate chap had to have his legs amputated below the knee so he could fit into the cab correctly :giggle:

Next up will be the final bit of painting on the body exterior - the white line along the length of the loco.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Andrew.

On the home run now I see Andrew... do you intend to varnish afterwards to seal the surfaces ?

    Hi Paul.

Yes, getting there now... I will give it a coat of varnish before I add the decals and a final coat with decals applied. I had a bit of a set back tonight when applying the white line along the bodyside - masking wasn't very successful with lots of bleed through. I tried 2 types of masking tape with no luck. Think I will order some waterslide decals instead.

    Best regards

    Andrew.

Tamiya do a pvc type masking tape suitable for curves etc which you might find has better adhesion to the bodyside. Sometimes avoiding paint bleed is quite difficult.

Been a few days since my last update, so I thought I’d post the latest progress on Avenger. With the driver painted and glued into position, the cab interior is finished.

I then moved onto the body again. The lining decals arrived at the end of last week, much happier with the result Vs attempting to mask and paint the line on the bodyside. I also applied the loco numbers and BR late crest. The Avenger nameplate is just placed in position to get the decals in the right place and will be glued later once the transfers are fully set.

Really happy with how this overhaul is going. Looking forward to getting over the line.

    All the best,

    Andrew.
