AJS’s Warship Class Shelf Queen Competition entry

Hi all.

Hope everyone is well.

It’s been over a week since my last update, so I thought I’d better pull my finger out....

I have now finished applying all of the water slide decals. I had to wait for an order of enamel varnish spray to seal the decals, which took a while to arrive.

Varnish coat applied. Just need to glue the etched name plates in place and I can start putting Avenger back together again.

Avenger’s nameplate and loco works build plate now fixed in place. I’ll begin the process of re-assembly this weekend.

I have now re-assembled the windows and cab into the body of Avenger. Using a toothpick I painted the windscreen wipers before moving onto some buffer beam detailing. The end of the loco that will couple to coaches was picked out in black to signify the vacuum hoses and coupling hook.

At the front I have secured the buffer beam that will take the detailed parts.

With the glue drying I turned my attention to the vacuum hoses. I decided to scratch build these using 2 different thicknesses of wire I had lying around. I have painted these in black and will cut to length when dry.

Next job was to replace the old Lima coupling hook that was missing. I removed the large d-loop and replaced with a modern NEM style coupling.

The bogie frame had a nice slot that I used to house the coupling, secured with super glue.

I’ll be moving onto detailing the front buffer beam over the next few days.

Thanks for the kind words Andy. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it is better than a RTR model, but I’ve really enjoyed bringing this old Loco, which had sentimental value to me back to life.... Showed my Dad earlier, he was made up with Avenger’s new look.

 

Finished the buffer beam detailing this evening, happy with the results. The coupling was 1 of a pack of 4 Hornby detail parts (I have some more locos that will be getting a makeover). The vacuum hoses were made from wire offcuts I had in my modelling stash.

Just got to refit the motor and dummy bogie now and the overhaul will be finished.... For now.

I still plan to convert to DCC sound when funds allow, but that can wait..... For now I’m looking forward to running Avenger on my layout.

Morning all.

Final re-assembly of Warship Class D804 Avenger is complete.

Avenger’s overhaul is now complete, looking forward to a good running session soon. My layout is in storage at the moment due to building work going on, so won’t be for a few weeks. I’ll post up a video as soon as I can. I have decided to do the DCC conversation later so I can save up for a sound decoder. I will be leaving it a few days to work out what weathering to do, for now I’d like to leave Avenger in ‘newly overhauled’ condition.

I have really enjoyed this overhaul and it has been rewarding bringing back to life a much loved loco that used to run on my Dad’s loft layout.

It has been great seeing everyone else’s shelf queen builds too, some amazing modelling out there
