Argh.. I hadn’t checked in with being on nights…. So opted to have a go with the polishing wheels I’ve used previously.

Any how’s, here’s a few more photos from this evenings work before setting off for the night shift (the joys of a 10pm start when the wife leaves at 6:30pm for her night shift!)

    IMG_9411.jpeg
last four coils covered - you will see some holes at the bottom of the two coils. They are for the securing screw.

    IMG_9413.jpeg

said screw. Just the one which traps the plastic lip of the coil against the base. Stops it moving and rotating.

    IMG_9414.jpeg
all 4 refitted, this shows the cutaway tops I referred to before… more details below.
    IMG_9415.jpeg
First one being refitted. It’s awaiting screwing in hence the large gap.
    IMG_9419.jpeg

And all 4 back in place.
    IMG_9416.jpeg
cleaning up the front face support post. It’s screwed on to the back plate and the front face by two screws. I have no idea why this end is threaded as just goes in to a hole.
    IMG_9417.jpeg
showing here where it fits. The thread has. I purpose..
    IMG_9418.jpeg
and the bottom is the same..
As you may see in some pictures, the back plate top has been polished up and then I’ve used some autobrite metal polish on it. The middle and lower half will follow another day.

    Thanks.
Once this bit is complete, it’s back to the wood work and re-reading the advice you gave me. Sadly we are now heading in to the cold and damp season, so laying it out outside to shellac probably won’t happen. I’d be glad just to get that new top finishes with glass in it.

and also the front panel still needs re printing.

Sadly, there were no before pictures only after…

    IMG_9421.jpeg
brass work cleaned up, just waiting the cream polish!

    IMG_9422.jpeg all the coils off.

    IMG_9423.jpeg
    ocd on the removed parts.

IMG_9424.jpeg polished and ready re reassemble.
IMG_9425.jpeg nearly looking like new! I’ve impressed myself here!

    IMG_9426.jpeg
    And back on the board.

so that just leaves the two small latch coils I. The rear of the face place - these are connected to the needle swing. To be fair, they look ok and intact but I just think now we have done 8 why not make them all match?

So going back to the mystery threads on the rear, Peter tells me his Scottish internal panels have these fitted - appears to be a circular threaded “nut” with one hole for tapping round and securing. A real belts and braces job.
    IMG_9460.jpeg

This one is in Peter’s “to do list” so looks a tad worse than mine to the rear (I think mine has lasted well on the back as it’s probably been secured to the board for 60 years keeping the moisture etc stable.

    IMG_9461.jpeg
But look at the front how it differs from mine. fantastic and interesting. The arms will drop by around 20 deg and the disc section changes to white with Train on line appearing.

I wonder if they are the same size and interchangeable?

Going a little off topic, I attended Stafford model railway exhibition today at the Stafford show ground.

very nice O gauge layout where they have all the signals and bells working.
    IMG_9479.jpeg IMG_9480.jpeg
this chap even has a block instrument and bell to the next “signalman”. Fantastic.. would loved to have seen more, but a little 3 year old was not drawn to this and soon dragged me away with his stool..

whilst on that subject, it’s amazing even stood on a stool how little the next generation can see when we have layouts at 4ft high.. one was even sat on a cutting so he couldn’t even see the trains.. anyway, that’s a topic for another day and else where on the forum.

Seems I’m trying to recreate half of Leeks block shelf! :hammer:

I have acquired from Peter a Tyers Signal repeater.

    IMG_9732.jpeg IMG_9733.jpeg
As dispatched. Doesn’t really need much work. The metal brackets for the name panel need a small clean up and I’m missing a nut and bolt out one of those brackets. And a screw for the rear terminal.
    IMG_9765.jpeg

however, quite surprised that an AA battery is enough to make it work! (A DPDT switch has been ordered to make this easier.

if there is no power the arm defaults to “Wrong”.
A pos and neg feed send it to On and swapping to the other way sends it to off.

I’m now thinking how I can link this to the layout and re-work a Dapol signal maybe off a servo control with a contact switch on either end.

but until then, back to the woodwork instead of Bakelite.

I realise it’s been over 6 months since the last post, but tonight I’ve trimmed up the beading for the front glazing.
I opted earlier in the year to fit some Perspex rather than glass - seen here before the protective film is removed.
    att.v-ZJnw4I86GpAltl0wiL6TjRyLAHS3mbE10WhwTxam0.jpeg

I didn’t take any photos of the beading as the light was fading. (And I wanted to watch the VE Day celebrations on BBC1.)
I’ve also trimmed up the beading that goes between the top and bottom, which leaves just an internal wood “plate) that overlaps the lid and the lower door.

oh, and the transfers have been ordered and printed for the front plate, just awaiting collection.

    I’ll update more soon.

Yes mate. You did a fab job, it seemed so daft not to. im awaiting the results. I’ve not seen them yet.

My big fear is either the size will be wrong or the colours won’t match. Not too worried about the latter so long as it’s close as who knows how it would have faired after all these years anyway.
As soon as they land (or rather I collect them) I’ll keep you posted.

Cheers Mate. Now don't stitch me up with a job like that again I am grey enough without that thank you. All I want to see now is the finished block instrument!

    For those still following…

and @Mossy - as it stands so far.

    IMG_1820.jpeg

The parts held in place with the tape (just to stop them falling out or loosing them) they have been gently marked so if and when then next come out, they go back in the same four places.

    IMG_1821.jpeg
along the bottom of the “cupboard” top/lid is a flat bead with a rounded edge. The original was two halves and so is this, sadly is was a 60/40 rather than a 50/50 and this is still similar. You can just see the two parts as it seems to have moved out of alignment on this one.
    IMG_1822.jpeg
    from the front.
    IMG_1823.jpeg
looking inside the side is much narrower but has an interesting butt join to the front one with the 45 degree angle meet of the two parts.
    IMG_1825.jpeg
it’s more visible in this one on the other side.

    IMG_1826.jpeg
and this is the middle join.

That’s it for now.. I’m very happy with it so far.
