Hi Paul, I think the second version is a closer match, but agree the slats might be a bit to wide. Kim
Another attempt 11mm base added to allow ease of fixing to the ply base, and lowered the print quality to 0.2mm layer height from 0.1mm and increased the from 30mm/sec to 40mm / to see the impact on quality and print speed
Thanks Kim I'll see how this test turns out, as I also want to make one direction of the slats approx 0.5 thicker (with a 0.2 mm layer height that will be either 0.4 or 0.6mm). The current slats measure 2.8mm, I think 2mm may be closer to what I need, but that will depend on if I can get them off the print bed without breaking. Paul
Hi Paul, just looked at your upload file and maybe the slats are a tad too wide at 12mm or so... just trying to think if that makes the distances between ironwork unrealistic, maybe bring them down to 10mm but then I could be quite wrong... I often am.
Test completed - 1 hour 40 min The one on the left with the additional plinth is the faster lower quality print, the one on the right the original print Hi Paul - The pitch of the slats is 14mm (2ft in 7mm) Paul
Counting the diamonds on the photo, it's approx 4 diamond in height, mine is giving 7, so looks like I need to increase the pitch And need to reduce the slat width Paul
So the spacings on the lattice will be even greater I presume. How big will the bridge be Paul when finished? Sounds very interesting.
To get the same number of diamonds I've had to go to 28mm centers, and also reduced slat size to 2mm Now just need to print it Paul the bridge will be 4ft approx in length Paul
3h3min later Second one started - I will make a lower quality one to see the difference. Now just need to find out what colour to paint them. Paul
I think it depends on what period the bridge is being modeled in Paul. On the LMR many iron bridges were painted in micaceous grey... remember Stoke Liverpool Road bridge with the James and Tatton sign on it? That was painted micaceous grey in steam days I recall. Now on the ER and also Southern I've seen steel bridges painted micaceous silver (particularly on ex GCR routes) not sure what they did in Dundee tho. Any chance you can go look at old abandoned rail bridges in the area? As a ball park option I'd suggest mixing matt black with silver in suitable amounts to get the correct shading of colour.
Couldn't you do circles ....... Only joking. That looks the biz. Great stuff and well worth the effort I think. Toto
I just remember James Tatton bridge being black - but I think that was more grime than paint same goes for Longton Bridge as well.
The bow string bridge at Longton was also painted micaceous grey, the three bridges on City Road next to North Western Yard were the same colour also.
