Spoke with Jim today, the J39 should be in the post. I've been threatening to by one since I jumped ship to O Gauge and after a brief conversation with his nibs which brought the subject back to the fore ...... decided to go for it.

    Pictures when it arrives.

    Cheers

When I was on the phone to Jim, he mention about a potential conversion kit to give a J38. Anybody know anything of such a beast. If so, maybe we can start a thread of enlightenment on the subject. Apparently it was a Scottish thing. :scratchchin:

I believe the J38 was the forerunner of the J39 and was built by Gresley in 1926 and described as 'modified J27's' and initially a further 68 for the Southern and North Eastern areas had been ordered but were subsequently cancelled when the LNER bought a load of EX ROD (Railway Operating Department) Former GCR 04 goods engines.

In all 35 J38 engines were built and all went to Scotland.

There we have it then. I'll see what's involved in the conversion kit. Maybe something for later.

Basically has a longer boiler, shorter smokebox and smaller driving wheels than a J39 , also no splashers above the wheels (due to the smaller driving wheels). Essentially the freight version of the J39. Designed for the Fife coal traffic, by the late 50's early 60's all were in Scotland, the majority in the Fife area, Dunfermline and Edinburgh - Toto your stomping ground.

is that a "Damn I've ordered the wrong one" I hear muttered in the background :avatar:

PS - don't go blaming me for a twitchy finger and melted plastic, I'm still on speaking terms with your good lady, although when this box arrives you maybe sleeping in Lulu's hutch.

    Hi Gary,

I am a member (as you might imagine being an LNER Modeller and it's the first place I go if I have questions that I can't find the answers to in my books - the info I posted above came from The RCTS Green Locomotives of the LNER Part 6A

ah but had it been delivered to yours instead you could have stopped Toto from guessing :avatar::avatar::avatar: plus you could have had a head start on building it for him :avatar:

Now there is a thought. After all, he does have a chassis jig that needs testing. :scratchchin: saying that, the J39 chassis is actually a fold up affair which I found strange so it won't require the Jig.

well that's even better cos it saves having to set it up, I take it Dundee has a suitable Hold and Fold to form nice sharp angles :avatar:

Thank goodness Mrs Toto hasn't found your Hold and Fold device otherwise Platform1 MRC would be very much the poorer for threads on the future kit building front. :avatar:
