Two single bolster wagons in the one kit. Looks like they are pretty straight forward kits. The downside ....... A little more white metal than I'd like ( but that's just the fear of white metal on my behalf ).

They are pretty nice kits and shall make up part of my maintainance rake.

    Pictures will follow.

    Cheers

    Toto.

Pictures as promised. This will make up part of my maintenance rake ..... eventually.
nice set of instructions as always......

the brass etches for two bogie bolster units .......

and two identical bags of white metal fittings and some small brass fittings.

not a lot to it but very useful little set all the same.

I don't understand this fear of white metal castings, in all the models I've built I have always glued them on, I only solder the brass etchings. Having said that, the Peckett kit I have is white metal and I am going to solder that for quickness of build. Modern adhesives are great for our kits, so don't worry about using them Toto.

    Cheer's, Pete.

    OK,
I'll try the glue on at least one to see how I get on. It may just help my confidence a bit as I dread to think of ruining a kit.

    cheers

Hi Toto, I don't think you will be disappointed, 5 minute epoxy is my glue of choice for jobs like sticking buffers or axle boxes, smaller stuff like loco wash out plugs I use super glue. Give it a try I know it will work and no melted castings .

    Hi Pete,

When we were at Telford I got some fresh white metal axle boxes for my Lowmac so I'll try the two part epoxy on them to dip my toe in the water. I'm sure it will be fine as well so if I get the lowmac finished ....... I'll continue on with one of the others. That is as well as keeping Luib Bridge moving. :avatar:

    Cheers

Hi Toto, you will not need a lot of epoxy for small parts, the more you use, the more you will need to clean up.

    Pete.

I think the dispenser that I have delivers them in equal amounts via a syringe. Just be a case of mixing them up with a cocktail stick before applying.

And here we are. My next build continuing on from my Taff Vale Models 2 plank wagon.

Now ...... I know I said that I would be sticking to the simpler kits and I think you will all agree that I've stuck to my guns there. Well, this kit offers simplicity of build but does contain a bit more white metal components, some of which should remain free to move ( the bolsters ) so this should make up the challenge that the lack of brass frets take away.

And .... there is two of them. So ...... stay posted over the next day or so as I plan to jump right into this tomorrow.

    cheers for now.

Looking forward to seeing this, I can imagine there may be a few toasted fingers on the way - with the associated descriptive anglo-saxon terms as well :avatar:

This train will be looking good. What will be in the maint train when you've finished.

I'd like one of my Ramsbottoms to be hauling these but I'm a little flummoxed on the instructions for these so I need to do some homework. Fingers crossed.

Can you send copies of these instructions Toto so it can be sorted ? I take it this is one of these kits that come minus any sensible diagrams.

Just another though I had for your maintenance train... how about when you shift up a notch in the skill level) dping one of Jim's six wheeler coaches, possibly a brake compartment and doing it as a staff riding and tool van? Most maintenance engineering trains run by the civils had a staff dormitory riding / tool van attached.

Great idea Yorkie. I'm sure I have a brake compartment coach of Jim's. It will be the 4 wheel version I'm sure .... I'll check.

It would only be the tumbleholm that would need to be looked at as there is not that much more to them. Rob showed a clever idea using masking tape and a rod.

What would happen would be a diversion from the instructions as it would bring a nice opportunity to personalise / customise / individualise the model. Possibly even keeping the roof removable to let folks see the inside if its built well enough.

I'll look through the kits / scratchbuilds sections as the available kits will have been posted up in there I'm sure.

    Thanks for the idea.

    Cheers

I guess it matters not if the coach is 4 or 6 wheeler really. I only suggested a 6 wheeler because they are a tad longer that's all. Personalising could take many ways from blocking out a window to adding side vents and stove pipes out the roof or even removing a door altogether by just plating over with thin etch or even just body filler. The other nice thing is adding transfer lettering to the sides which denote a particular location... you could add in the words "Luib Bridge Engineers Dept" or something like that to make the train really bespoke and special.

    cheers Yorkie

    Yes. Endless possibilities.

I've checked the forum pages and I have a 6 wheel full brake. I know I have others though so I'll check the shed today. This could be a build that's on the cards quite soon and a welcome break from wagons.

    Cheers

And we are off ..... with the single bolster wagon ( first of two ).

And we start off by drilling a 1.6mm hole in the centre of the floor to take the bolster pivot. .... then start the two folds required to form the sides ....

    and here we are .....

you should be able to see the 2 bends. One is an awkward little fecher with attitude and the other larger bend a bit easier and can actually be done using your fingers. Just as well as once you have formed the first smaller bend with your folding machine ...... you cant use it for the second bend as you would crush the first in the machine.

and a second just to show the whole body. the corners come together very nicely ..... just need to see if they stay as nice when the solder hits them ..... :avatar: all will be revealed in my next post ..... Now ..... where is my soldering iron.

    cheers for now

And .... on we go ....

got the main body soldered up then started on the sole bars and the buffer beams ...... this meant ...... more folding ....

and there we go ..... the first of the sole bars being bent into shape .

job done .... but hold on ..... theres more .....

two sole bars and two buffer bars bent up ready to fit into place.

I tinned both the underside of the wagon floor and the adjoining beams then ......

    sole bars fitted.

next up the buffer beams ....

    job done .......

pretty neat even if I do say so myself .....

    the underside once complete .....

and a general shot of the progress so far .....

more to come once I have read the destructions ....

    cheers for now
