I was wondering about one of these Soldering / Desoldering Station Having a temp range from 100 to 480 C with both the soldering iron and the hot air gun so in theory you could heat the an area of the model up for soldering, without melting the whitemetal. Any opinions ? Paul
Forgot to report, my adjustable temperature soldering iron arrived as did the 3 spare tips that I ordered. It has now been designated official white metal iron.
I am sure that you won't regret it. Another tip is make sure that you turn the iron on well before you plan to use it - because it doesn't have a readout it's difficult to tell when it's hot enough and it's a right pain trying to solder white metal when the iron isn't hot enough. A couple more tips and these may be a Granny and Eggs moment for you but hopefully they will help someone: When soldering whitemetal to brass you can either, tin the brass first with 145[sup]0[/sup] solder and then solder the white metal to it using 70[sup]0[/sup] solder or you can solder straight to the brass by using 100[sup]0[/sup] solder. I have to confess that despite having 100[sup]0[/sup] solder in stock , I still find myself tinning the brass first because to me the 100[sup]0[/sup] solder doesn't seem to flow the same. Unless it's just the 100[sup]0[/sup] solder that I am using (Carrs) and other brands are better. Being the tight fisted Yorkshireman I have quite a bit to use up so I doubt I will be trying other brands anytime soon.
