    Yes Jim,
I don`t know why it has been done, but it goes all the way around the building.
It`s possibly decorative or practical or a practical decorative solution to some issue......don`t know.?
I`ve used it before on GCJ mainline station building ( Metcalfe kit bash ) which borrowed from Bewdley`s detail.

I suppose it means there is no need to seal along the edges of the slates. Good job.

    G`day Folks,
Today, I turned my attention towards the main chimney on the building.
I`m using / copying one of the big stacks on Bewdley......it won`t be an exact copy , but pretty close I feel....so we`ll see how it turns out.
This is the prototype looking from the rear of the building, which is probably the best angle to get an idea of it`s dimensions.

    33941061383_8483fc704b_b.jpg

I counted the bricks and brick courses for the base and the top, so that I could work out it`s actual size. Then looked up a chart that gave British brick dimensions and then converted it all to 4mm scale.
I made a template in the shape of the gable to get the correct angles, and then applied that to the bottom sides of the chimney to mark it out and cut it out.
Below the angles are cut, now this needs to be cut in half to the correct height for the base.

    IMG20230517102459.jpg

The other sides were then cut to the correct dimensions, with the cut edges that will sit on the angle on the gable being cut as a bevel.
A top plate was also cut and the whole lot glued together to form the base of the chimney.

    IMG20230517105827.jpg

Another plate was cut with beveled edges to sit on top of the plate that was already in place on the base, and then the top half of the chimney ( basically a box ) was cut and glued together.
The two halves will be joined permanently after the brick paper is fitted to them.

    IMG20230517121624.jpg

The two top plates were then cut out. The upper one is slightly larger than the lower one and the lower one is slightly larger than the chimney column.

    IMG20230517125743.jpg

Just checking here to see if all is good. Also on the right you can see the template.
From here we will Blacken the top plates and their edges and the edges of the card that will contact the roof.

    IMG20230517125810.jpg

Time to add the brick paper and assemble the chimney

    IMG20230517140701.jpg

Checking for fit.......the chimney is not permanently fitted to the building yet, I need to add the chimney pots after I make some.

    IMG20230517141426.jpg

    An overall pic

    IMG20230517141710.jpg

    A bit closer

    IMG20230517141710B.jpg

I am also considering at least one more smaller chimney, maybe two.??.......need to work that out.
    Anyway we are making progress.

    G`day Folks,
A little bit more progress today on the station building.
I decided to do one more chimney.......a bit smaller than the first one, but substantial nonetheless.

    IMG20230518093111.jpg

Chimney pots were added and then the chimneys were fitted into place and then I moved onto creating the barge boards for the gable ends.
I have a white heavy paper that possibly came from an art sketching pad, anyway it seems just right for the job. I wanted a white paper or card so that I could get a good colour result with the marking pen.
It`s critical to get the angle right first, and then you can measure and cut them out. I colour them before cutting because it`s easier that way, and the edges are coloured once cut.

    IMG20230518144454.jpg

The first barge board fitted as flush as I can get it......this will have an end cover strip added on top of the slates once all the barge boards are fitted.

    IMG20230518144504.jpg

All barge boards fitted and then the end cover strips were applied on top of the end slates and flush with the barge boards.
Then the finials ( coloured ends of toothpicks ) were added to finish it off

    IMG20230518164056.jpg

    IMG20230518164149.jpg

So now we are down to the detail.......guttering, down pipes, station signs and advertising signs........possibly valleys in the roof joins and flashing for the chimneys......when will it end.??
When I`m happy to let it go I suppose ???.......of course I forgot to mention that the whole lot has to be weathered to take that pristine look away from some of the details.
    All in good time....

That is simply stunning Gormo.:thumbs::thumbs:

You have Libre Draw down pat and I'm sure you could build Paddington Station in OO ! :D

    Cheers, Gary.

I always think chimneys give a building that final touch. Don’t get carried away though, make sure there is a room with a fire to feed each pot. That building really is a masterpiece.

    Thanks Gary.......:tophat:
Yes LibreDraw has become my tool of choice when trying to create a building from scratch.
It just requires becoming familiar with how it works and then using it to your advantage, as is the case with any tool we might want to use.
Paddington Station ay..???:scratchchin:........well that`s rather ambitious and not on my to do list. however it could be done, even though it`s epic.
All the parts are contained within the sheets of blank card.....you just have to work out how to cut them out and put it all together..........:avatar::avatar:

Her's a challenge for your next build Gormo. Take a look at those chimneys.

Just up the road from us.

    Blimey !!!,
    You`re a hard task master Brian........:avatar:
The thing is with any of these difficult and unique shapes and textures, is to break it down into it`s individual elements.
The picture is small but I`ll do my best.
The tall chimneys at the front for example, have a low rectangular base with same height joined cylinders on top of it, and smaller cylinders on top them again. Then tall cylindrical chimney pots on top of the smaller cylinders. The chimney pots appear to have a dominant woven texture pattern on their outer shell. The chimney pots are topped with a plate like ring having a slightly larger diameter than the chimney pot.
If I were making that particular chimney, the most difficult part is the weave. I would wind fine wire in a spiral around a cylinder and glue it in place. Then a second wire wound across the first wire to simulate the weave.......spray it terracotta and then the rest is much easier.

Every chimney is a different shape and built from brick. When Henry VIII visited the place, it is Chenies Manor, he decided he wanted similar chimneys on Hampton Court Palace.

    Sorry to hijack your post.

Well I still think you take each one and break it down into it`s individual components......where there is a will , there is a way.......and it could be done.
Personally, I don`t feel inclined to inflict that much pain on myself, so I`m afraid you will not see that project in the pages of Platform 1, from me at least.

I am sure I saw a tv program about the rehabilitation of this building and the craftsmanship that went into reconstructing those chimneys. As I recall, not one is the same as the other !

    Cheers, Gary.

    OK Folks,
The finishing touches were added to Bamford Station building today, mind you, some weathering and little touches are still required.
Firstly , guttering was added all around.
In this project I have used rail as guttering. The umbrella struts I normally use were just that little bit too big for this one, especially on the canopies, so I thought I`d give it a go. Where the main roof meets the canopy, I have used it flat side out to represent a more substantial box gutter whereas everywhere else on the building, the flat side is against the edge of the roof.

    IMG20230520114225.jpg

Then down pipes were added. Here we use gal wire cut and bent to shape and coloured with a marking pen.

    IMG20230520141714.jpg

The box junction where two down pipes meet is made from a cable tie head split in half vertically.....Chris M`s suggestion from a while back...
Then moved onto signage......there may be one or two more to go on.......I need to find some in my archive....:scratchchin:

    IMG20230520154651.jpg

    IMG20230520154713.jpg

And now some night time shots

    IMG20230520155612.jpg

    IMG20230520155244.jpg

So now I will move onto the annex that I keep waffling on about and then next to that will be a weatherboard building.
Still plenty to do and with the weather getting increasingly colder, I will be building my buildings indoors for a while.
