erm - may be worth checking the instructions - I know there still in the box

it puts the side castings at step18 (the last one) to avoid melting castings  .....

Soldered up the second axle assembly and the stay bars

Not only is it flat on the track it rolls smoooooothly - boy is that lucky :avatar:

OK ...... its taken time ...... and much frustration ...... but I am getting there ..... eventually

    side 1 ....

and side 2 ..... after an aborted attempt ....

I should have shown the aborted work ( two slightly melted castings ) but forgot to photograph them prior to resolving it ..... apologies. I genuinely dont mind showing my failures.

anyway .... onwards ..... slowly ..... but onwards nonr the less.

    more later

Wheel bearings fitted to the W irons.

    absolutely hilarious how they happened.

and a bit of a close up ...

I drilled these out using a dremmel ..... .... with a very neat drill size. Its amazing the heat that comes of drilled white metal so after drilling ( very soon ) I offered the bearing into the warm W iron and squeezed in place with a set of long nose pliers. You could feel the bearing just sink into the white metal ...... and perfect.

    Absolute luck or Wot. :avatar:

I am impressed that you managed to fit the brake gear Paul. When I built mine the brake shoes were miles too narrow for the wheelbase so I ended up scratch building them.

A nice effort from both of you and one which will do your confidence no end of good. Looking forward to more (and getting my workbench back up and running in the next couple of weeks or so).

    Hi Rob

The vacuum side was well and truly joe'ed, and fettled to fit (ish), this has been a different experience, and as you said a good learning curve. It would have been easier if I'd not screwed up the original chassis build :whatever:

And now have developed a method for attaching white metal to brass - only established today after my 100 degree solder arrived. I had been using 70 degree solder which flows really well, and for the faint hearted, can be stripped down with boiling water - very useful when numpty here built it to the wrong size. However the 100 degree solder appears to have a stronger bond, and didn't require the brass being tinned with 145 degree, my 70 degree solder would solder directly to the brass, but could be pulled apart.

come on, get your act together

last dampers fitted, and 1st cleanup done, then washed with washing up liquid, follwed by cream cleaner SWMBO bless her cotton socks bought me the lemon scented stuff as it smells better ( it wont be able to mask the smell of paint primer :avatar:), finally into the ultrasonic cleaner for 20 mins, and the result is .......

The vacuum pipes diget damaged with the scrubbing process, but have been fixed for the pics.

Note to self - throw away tooth brush before going to bed, it may taste funny :giggle:

    Ah well

yer teeth will be bright enough then ....... :avatar:

I've finished the other two buffers as below ....

I have decided to hold off with the rest of the white metal stuff as my brand new Duratool variable temperature soldering iron has completely packed in. Not amused.

I have ordered another new one ( not duratool ) and it should be here by mid week. Meanwhile ...... I have another project to be getting on with.

    cheers

Ah ha, found my other one that I couldn't find to start with ..... so ...... more white metal tortured tonight ....

more cleaning to be done and a little filling here and there. The photos really show up the gaps where the solder never quite reached.

and the other end ..... crueler yet.

and one last one for now.

So .... what does tomorrow hold ....... ohhhhh boy ...... its the W irons, wheels, brake gear and a few other small odds and sods.

wish me luck. it may not be up for pride of place but ..... its a start.

    cheers

Pressure ...... :whatever: .... none of it ....... I'm hoping that if I get as far as paint, it will help hold it together. :avatar: I've come this far with a reasonable result ( for a beginner ) . Let's see if I can actually finish it or if I make a dogs dinner out of it. I'll need about 4 coats of primer just to get rid of the scratch Mark's from the cleaning up operation.:avatar: The whole kit is half etched now.

    Cheers

You'll not need many coats of primer, I only applied 2 thin coats, and that was only because I missed a bit of the underframes.
The primer will fill in a lot of the surface blemishes, and remember, it was a woodern body, so the wood has grain.

Yes true and my memory of empty Pipe wagons backed off in Cockshute Yard or loaded with wire coils at Longport was that they were pretty much bashed about with grass and weeds growing in the corners of the body.

Sorry Paul, yes just the body. The underframe and all below that is black. - When ex works that is. As you say they soon turned to an all over rust looking colour.
