Would have liked to attend, but SWMBO has her fortnightly Friday scrapbooking/card making night on tonight... Only if I could get her to do something usful with card, like building Scalescenes kits... (Yeah right...) Cheers, Gary.
Train night has come and gone at Moonan Flats a near full house tonight and was great to catch up with Cameron who also tried his hand at shunting the yard with the momentum and brakes similar to a real loco it can take a bit of getting use to but a few runs up and down the yard Cameron was up to speed. Future exhibition crew member I think if Cameron is interested. A bit of a spread was put on by Shelley with some nice Mini pizzas and a freshly baked cake. Mmmm yum I managed to score the last pizza it was just sitting there all on its lonesome waiting to see who was game to grab it Train night at Moonan Flats Train night at Moonan Flats O Shelley decided to go half State Rail with plastic plates but luckily Old NSWGR with real cups for the beverages. Saved on the washing up with the larger than usual numbers to night. Toto wrote: Yes was a nice tonight Shelley usually dose a lot more variety like home made sausage rolls etc but the pizzas were soooo! good Shelley said that we polished off over 30 of the mini pizzas between us Did I say that they were yummy. I think there was just enough of the cake left over so I can have a piece for morning tea today, wish there was more, not game to ask Shelley to knock up another as she is on a 7-8 day stretch at work, I am very thankful that she came home from work and started to bake it for us for supper.
Thanks Chris and Shelly for the supper The mini pizza's vanished quickly. Need I say more except very nice. Getting used to the momentum of each engine was a challenge. I enjoyed it. You could spend a lot of time on such simple layout. Getting up close and seeing the detail was great. Cheers Cameron
The scenic items have been added to Moonan Flats The Palm tree, well it is customary in Australia that at least one palm would be planted around the loco facility's usually near the water tower or the entry to the loco facility Whilst looking at the stalls at the exhibition I came across a very nice looking Palm the fronds are actually etched parts not plastic like most and decided that Moonan Flats needed one I also found the politically incorrect Black Boy or Grass tree I'm sure Gary knows the botanical name I can't recall, it's always been a black boy to me so got a couple as well. The layout being so narrow needs distraction's for the eye at the back scene edge the black boys add to this. They are now planted see the photo below. Attached files
Announcement it's Train night at Moonan Flats this Friday if anyone's interested get in contact. And another photo of the latest plantings Attached files
Lovely specimens Chris. Grass Tree (can't call them 'Black Boy' no more, politically incorrect): Xanthorrhoea australis (pronounced Zan-thor-rea) Cabbage Tree Palm : Livingstonia australis I would have been interested in Friday night, but my brothers are coming for dinner..! Cheers, Gary.
Thanks Gary for the Botanical names Funny that its Politically incorrect to call them Black boys now. However I know a few indigenous people that call the Grass Trees, Black Boys, why because for 200+ years they have been known as black boys. Family dinner usually trumps train supper We could have dug out the bed in the spare/storage room so you didn't have to make a late night run home.
Very nice trees and plants Chris, It`s a pleasure to see something that looks real, as opposed to a plastic effort that`s not even close. I still call them Black Boys and their is no malice in the name. It`s just that they`ve always been called that as far as I can remember. http://www.clickGormo
gormo wrote: Thanks Gormo When I saw the trees my thoughts were they actualy look like what they are suppose too. Hang the expense if they look that good I've tried making palms by cutting fine paper and painting but they are fragile and not as convincing. Tree ferns come out ok with real fern leaves dried in the method flower pressers use, mounted on a carved and painted balsa wood trunk, (on Lizard Ridge) I will do a little dry brushing on the black boys, black bits as they have a slight sheen under the LED lights. I'm with you on the black boys as well
You have trees that look like that... do theyhave a space ship? .. look the part though http://www.click
ianvolvo46 wrote: Yes Ian we have lots and of wonderful and weird plants to go with the weird animals and bugs, some of then are just as dangerous.
To improve the look of the grass tree, you could airbrush the lower 1/3 of the foliage a light brown/grey colour. The flower spike could be painted a rusty dark brown at the base and the flowering section above, off white. Now, for your palm, the fine stringy stuff under the crown has me puzzled... Usually, Livinstonia has dead foliage hanging down like a sheath. The foliage is identical to the crown, but collapsed around the trunk and dry brown/grey in colour... Cheers, Gary.
