    Just as it says.

The second competition of 2022 will be announced shortly.

This will be quite an involved competition as I am asking for a complete loco kit build to be undertaken and documented.

This one will be a slow burner as it is a big ask.

The build can be in any scale but must not gave been started. A photo if the kit parts should be posted when you register you intent to enter.

The prize for this as kindly being donated by David and Trisha Hill of Gladiator models in Manning Wardle " Catherine " 0 - 8 - 0 brass loco kit in 7mm O Gauge.

This competition is open to all to enter with the usual caveat that it must be all your own work.

The official rules will be posted in due course. Keep an eye open for them coming out.

You can comment on this thread but do not post up entries here. The site for entries will be created in the normal way.

A big thanks to David and Trisha Hill ( Gladiator Kits ) for their generosity and commitment to Platform 1.

    Cheers toto

    Hot off the press

    Ths prize donated by Gladiator has changed from that advertised to a LNER N 4 / 5 0 - 6 - 2 tank loco.

I'm sure it will be every bit as good as the previously stated 0 8 0 Katharine tank.

    Cheers for now

That's a generous prize from one of the forums sponsors. This competition is one I won't be entering as I don't build loco kits.
Saying that it will be exciting to watch the masters of kit building at work and enjoy keeping up to date with their individual build progress.

Presumably you are looking for the loco to be built and painted as part of the entry?

I would assume it would be just the building part Rob? If it includes the paint which might be weather dependent or the builder prefers to have it done by a pro the time scale could be considerable?
    Just my tuppence worth.:)

That's pretty much why I asked, many of my loco builds are build only.

Just the build please. Painting is another thing altogether.

I personally like to see these kits in brass or whatever medium prior to paint being applied. I think it shows the intricacy of the individual build parts and detail prior to being covered by paint.

Not just that but as pointed out, some prefer to farm the painting element out to pro's and the competition is based on the entrants skills not the painters.

Lats keep it simple, a build is asking enough I think.

If enough people were to show interest in a build and paint competition houng forward, I could try and accomodate this and provide a prize fitting of the effort involved. I dont believe I've just said that as it will probably cost myself to foot a decent prize. .......

Anyway .... I hope I have answered the question. I will be creating the competition forum space shortly and will be more explicit 2uth reference to the rules. Meanwhile ..... ask away.

    Cheers

Having had the question of paint answered I have another.

The given rules state that the kit must be untouched and my question is, does anyone have an objection to my entering with the loco portion of Princess Louise?

Although I have built the tender, I haven't started the locomotive itself so it's untouched. The rules don't state what sort of loco it should be and this one will be a long and complex build which will be more involved than a tank locomotive.

If it's not acceptable then I will sit this one out. As by the time I have finished the Princess I suspect that the competition will be pretty much ready for closing.

Well ... there we have it.

I would accept that the loco part of a tender loco kit would be comparable to the build of a smaller tank loco.

What is the opinion ? .... an interesting one.

Comments / acceptance / objections please.

I think given the circs Rob has stated, I would find that acceptable..

i don’t think on this occasion I would be able to partake. It’s not something I would normally do. (Loco builds) and have only done the 02 in OO and the L&M Kitson in 0-16.5 previously and both now well over 20 years ago.

good luck to those taking part.

Like Andy, no objections a loco is as good as a tender engine even without its tender, though I won't be entering as I haven't got an unstarted loco, a few shelf queens but they wouldn't qualifier.

    Thanks Mossy.

We did do a shelf queen competition before which went down well so I may repeat that later in the year.

Thanks for your response though as all opinion help and count whether you take part or not

    Cheers

I cannot see any reason why Rob shouldn't enter the loco portion of his Princess build, it certainly gets my vote being an LMS engine. Personally the jury is out as to whether I enter since I have so much on the go currently and need to crack on and focus with the station project.

Not sure many of us could compete with professional standard builders like Rob Pulham and Steve Fay and their creations :scratchchin:

The earlier you start the better :avatar:

Although as I moved from 4mm to 7mm, I may be better off changing to Gauge 1, to give a little more scope for my eyes when they reach 111 years old (as Bilbo would say my Eleventy first year).

    Ok.

    Here is the low down.

The starting date for this is anytime now.

You must enter as usual by creating your own entry thread ie .... toto's 2022 loco build competition entry

The first post can confirm your intention to enter, but your second must start of with photographs of the content of parts in an inbuilt state.

    The rules and judging criteria

    1. All your own work
    2. Any scale
    3. Any medium eg brass, white metal, resin etc etc
    4. Complete scratch build allowable rather than a kit but forming of individual parts must be evidenced.
    5. No bonus for a tender loco over a tank loco
    6. The loco element ot a tender loco build equals a tank loco or diesel loco build.
    7. No painting required but can if you like.
    8. Regular step by step photographic updates. No block updates allowed. Ie half the progress in one post

    Judging criteria

    1. Frequency and quality of posts including sufficiency of image quantity.
    2. Level of entrants experience / effort versus final result
    3. Quality of accompanying build description highlighting build difficulties and how they were overcome
    4. General attitude and perseverance in the face of potential defeat ( the feck it factor ).
    5. The finished result
    6. Level of completeness of the build by the final date.
    7. Kit enhancements

At the end of the day, the individual voter can weight their chosen criteria on their own merit which hopefully opens up a chance for everyone to win based on each individuals take on the entry.

The above are the rules for now, they can be added to based on any further questions asked. However I'd rather close off the rules asap to prevent constant changes so if you have a query ...... sooner rather than later.

The closing date for this shall be Satirday the 5th of November with the winner being announce 7 days later.

The poll which will take the votes will be displayed on the 6th November and close 7 days later. In any event the poll shall last for 7 days.

    The poll result is final.
The prize is is non negotiable and no cash equivalent is available.

Good luck to all who participate

    Your flounder ...... toto
