Looking forward to seeing these assemblies come together. I think you have the worst over once these are done.

Don't forget Paul, that most DCC decoders (but not all, I gather) are also able to be used on a DC layout, so if you chose a decoder with this option (switchable On/Off via the CV's, but usually enabled as purchased), then you could run on either a DCC or DC layout. You would just need to research if this option was available on your chosen decoder (sound maybe???).

Thanks Keith for that, can I come back to you about this when the time is right please? Basically my layout Elton Crossing is just straight DC so my loco's will run around on that, now since Toto and Paul are building much larger ones as DCC and I believe they plan to couple them together making something quite spectacular it would be nice for a couple of loco's the 24 and 4MT to be DCC too. So that will be the point I'll need advice in which product to buy and wiring up if you get my drift.

I don't have much knowledge of ESU decoders since after an unhappy experience a couple of years ago, I avoid them where possible and stick to Zimo when it comes to sound decoders. As you'll no doubt be aware, there are a good number of suppliers of loco sound files, some offering them for ESU, some for Zimo, so much will depend on your personal preference on hearing them. I've mostly used John Gymer's "YouChoos" on Zimo decoders, and if you go on the "YouChoos" website, you can listen to the individual soundfiles from his loco sound library, which might be useful. He also offers advice and can tailor files and functionality to your individual requirements, which is useful. Functions-wise, 4 functions are normal but some 21 pin decoders have a total of 6 functions available which might be handy for lights/fans etc. (I must point out that I have no connection with "YouChoos" except as a satisfied customer.)
If you are 'considering' DCC at a later date for your layout, may I suggest that you put in the "Busbars" under the layout and add 'droppers' from each rail at the earliest opportunity, as it's much easier than having to go back and do this at a later date.......it's no fun lying on your back trying to solder 'uphill', as molten solder down your sleeve ain't funny.:giggle:
Regarding DCC control systems and throttles, once again, it's down to personal preference, I use the Lenz system as do at least a couple of other members, but I'd say try a few out and see which you find easiest to live with as there are plenty of options available. Be aware that as far as I know, you will not be able to use the sounds function on a DC layout, as you will need the DCC setup and throttle to select the sound function, I'm not sure about lighting/fans on DC , as some RTR "DCC ready" loco's have a limited lighting function on DC without a decoder actually fitted. When you get nearer the point of wiring and fitting out lighting/fans etc, get back to me and we'll discuss the way forward.
I'll be happy to help if I can.
    Keith.

I think I'd go for a six function if possible. For a kick off ... directional lighting, cab lighting, fans would nearly hoose a 4 function. Depends what else you intend installing. A smoke unit may be.... :avatar:. I have DCC sound waiting to be fitted to my class 37. It's a legomanbiffos sound chip. Can't remember what type, I'll check it out and come back.

    Cheers

Thanks for your advice Keith I will deffo be in contact as the time gets nearer. Just to describe the Elton Crossing layout, it is fitted with bus bars and dropper wires where there are a couple of isolating sections fitted in conjunction with a crossover road, the motors driving the points are Cobalt IP and these are switched by a lever frame fitted with relay contactor circuits. My plan was to run DCC locos but function the points though a lever frame by physical operation. Probably best for me to start a completely new thread so you can talk me through what needs to be done to convert to DCC. Thanks Keith I really am appreciative of your kind offer of advice.

Not thought about a smoke unit but that would be something nice to see coming out of a very grubby green 24 hauling a rake of minerals. Thanks Toto for any advice.

I'll see if I can come across any examples where sleuths units have been fitted to Diesels. It would finish it off nicely.

Well this is a nice dream but imagine the 24 sound fitted and making smoke blasting out of the tunnel on Luib Bridge, a nice rake of about 25 minerals and standard brakevan. I have all this rolling stock already to go whenever. Imagine a 25 double heading and similarly fitted as well... nicey nice me thinks.

If you want to see smoke being used effectively in diesels, have a search for the work of Cliff Williams - there will probably be something on Western Thunder

Very nice Paul, I would imagine you are feeling quite chuffed with yourself, and can see some light at the end of the tunnel.

A 25 plus 25 wagons and brake van, that would just about fill all 4 tracks on the traverser, however our excuse, as at our altitude, and the slopes either side there's a 5 wagon limit :avatar:, still will look good posed for photo's

I went through a bit of a wagon fetish some time back and sought out unbuild and part built kit bargains some were good others needing attention, to be honest there is way too much rolling stock for my own good. Sorry Paul I wasn't bragging... that's not my style.

Get some photos up. Better starting a new thread though. Maybe in rolling stock / wagons. It'll keep this thread on course for your build.

Toto ok a new thread on rolling stock then as I've just taken a few pictures of available built minerals, most need numbering and additional weathering. There is also five more unbuilt 16 tonners waiting in the stash.
