:scratchchin: Been thinking ..... Yes ..... I know ...... Dangerous, but I think I am going to make the main core of my platform from layers of foam board topped with a final layer made of Daler board. The platform edges, once painted and weathered will stick quite happily to the front of that composite using copydex. I can drill a series of holes up from underneath the baseboard into the under side of the foam board and locate dowels to hold the platform in place rather than gluing it down. That way it's removable intransit and the plaster platform fronts stand less chance of cracking from any shock whilst travelling. Just an idea .......

    Cheers

Don't you worry Gary, that will start soon. I'd like to get that platform in first to make sure the clearance with the track and the rear opening is working out.

    Cheers

Visitors tonight, so no shed. Probably tomorrow night now if SWMBO does not have her dancing class.

Great idea Toto, also a foam lined carrier box for the platform could help protect against accidental damage when in transit to and from exhibitions maybe... just a thought.:scratchchin:

    Hi York Paul,

I am thinking of that. It's a shame if you manage to get a decent structure made just to see it getting bashed about in the back of a van with the potential for other stuff to fall on it etc. Some of these kits are expensive so I think some transit boxes with sufficient internal protection would be a good idea.

    cheers

Well it can also be the difference between something working or not.

    Toto,
I have used the dowel idea for structures on my Poppy layout with great success. The houses just come down in the right spot every time. At least with your solid foam platforms there should be some decent length for the dowels to stick into, rather than onto like mine with the bottom of the house baseplates.
    Cheers

Gary, he's not a quick learner - SWMBO has been trying to teach him how to do the dishes, and after 19yrs of training still needs to be shown how it its done, even Lulu has picked up this training malarky quicker than Toto :avatar:

Don't you have to do the dishes first...?? :avatar::avatar:

Looking forward to your progress. Will it just be measuring up for the platforms etc or will track go down ??

    Cheers, Gary.

    Hi Gary,

I have a few things to do. First I need to add a couple of fixtures to securely fix the back scene boards to the baseboards. That won't take long. Then I will be working out the placement of the platform edges in relation to the track on the track towards the rear. This will let me start laying the track and I will then be able to work out the depth of the platform. The platform will be made of two or three thicknesses of foam board glued together and a top layer of Daler board. The platform edge is Townstreet so that will require painting etc as well.

That will really open up the layout to a few things. The carriage works shed build, the remainder of the track laying and the low relief warehouse build which traverses the platform. ( One of my timber track kits ). Of course the track wiring and electrics etc will be done as it progresses. All in all, we should see some pretty rapid progress for a while and the layout starting to take shape again. The goods shed can wait as it does not really effect the progress of any of the other elements at the moment. Same with the signal box. The former being a Timber Tracks product and the latter a Townstreet product.

    more later

    cheers

I would measure the foot print of the Signal box and goods shed and transfer that to the layout as well. It'll give you an idea of available space around the structures for any other details you wish to add. ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

    Hi Gary,

I have already done it for the goods shed. I'll need to look at the signal box again. Its been a while since I have looked at it but I know the overall footprint is ok.

    cheers

Finally got to the shed tonight for a wee while.

Finished of fixing the back scenes ........

Ill make key holes for the fixing screws so they can drop in.

flattened out a couple of angle brackets to secure the two back scenes together.

Then it was on to the platform which is being made out of foam board with a Townstreet front end. 5 and 3/4 inches deep in total.

and five layers of foam board deep takes it to the recess behind the edging stones.

Now ...... the copydex to glue the foam board layers together .......

and all five layers go together ..... took a whole A2 sheet .....

    and the platform frontage ......

and a length of track to give the idea.

Now to let the copydex dry out 100% although it does seem to have dried already. A little sanding along the front edge just to level it off and give a good edge for which the platform edge ( plastercast ) to be stuck to. That will leave a layer of Daler board ( Photographic mount board ) to be offered up to the edge of the platform edge recess and to the top of the foam board to give the final platform surface.

    Looks good Toto.

A simple method to reduce the need for excessive board is to zig zag slats of board vertically along the base of the platform top to the correct height needed. This is the same method used by the likes of Scalescene, Metcalfe etc... ;);)
