May need a few of these Chris ! Edit The link that was here got corrupted in some way can’t remember What it was Cheers, Gary.
Wow go out for the day and look what happened. Paul, Toto, and Everyone at Platform1 Thanks, very unexpected Photo of the week. Big thankyou. Gary Just the right signs big thanks Ian it's not been very well planned really just looks like it. Orignaly I planned a bridge to cover the entry / exit and had put off building. So I felt like a break from kit building and doing a bit of scratch building and make it up as I go modelling. With a photo of a bigger bridge as inspiration. I got some new square profile wood from the hardware as the round Dowl I purchase at the beginning of the layout project was not like the photo and a basic scratch plan of the bents and I was away. The bits you can't really see well in the photo's are the perspective built into the structure it's wider at the front of the layout and the planks inscribed are also wider at the front than at the back, in fact at the back there are actualy more planks across the with of the bridge it's a small thing but it fools the eye and unless you tell people they don't know that they noticed and that makes it worth while the little bit of extra effort pays off. I would have liked to put more bolt detail on but didn't underestermated how many bolts were needed but wasn't going to special order 2 extra packs of bolts and wait 2 weeks I'm way to impatient Off to the printer now to see if I can make some road signs thanks Again Gary.
Moonan Flat is looking great (as expected). Do you think there will be a backscene before Thornleigh? Ian
Hi Ian yes there will be that's something I have been putting off as well. With glue and static grass flying around the last few days I'm leaving it to last. Gary don't think I have ever seen a sign at a country station or road bridge for train spotters in Australia, but if the bloke had a fishing rod I could put a sign up for that if it was modern times I could have the Divy van and two cops on the bridge, stopping the gunnzel from taking train photos
Kimbo wrote: Thanks Kim for the kind words re the timber no problem was a pleasure I always like a visit to Bunnings got some new Dremel quick lock cutting disc in a set whilst was their. Having a play tonight getting some new and old rolling stock fettled for the exhibition and was shunting carriages back and forth checking all was good so some photos below. SMR guards Van at the end of the line this is a work in progress from a friend, who has had a change of prototype in his hobby interests, so I will finish it off by adding brake gear and some replace some parts That are missing or damaged. Next are some coal hoppers that need some TLC from the same modeller Pulled by a old 0-6-0 tank that I acquired also in need of some TLC it is a sweet little runner after new pickups fitted, the Heavily rusty wheels buffed back to life and the body fixed was a little bent, I will be converting to represent one of the SMR colliery Locos so will be a dirty weathe beaten black in colour instead of the marron. Way, Way too many projects on the go
Congratulations on picture of the week, I can see you have put a heck of a lot of work intoMoonan Flat layout Looks very impressive. Did you make or purchase the new pickups for the loco ? As for Bunnings i'm also a sponsor, as here in Armadale it's the only Hardware storeapart from Masters who are on a rapid decline.
ianvolvo46 wrote: Thanks Ian I need the projects to keep my mind ticking that's why so many now where did I put that loco that needed???Mmmm Hmmm
RALPH wrote: Thanks Ralph The pickups are made as a wiper style using Phosphor Bronze wire that I purchased at the hobby shop By Tichi Train $5-$6 for a tube with up to 10 pieces in it, I got several sizes so can use what suits for each different use ie pickups, Spring wire, other detail items on wagons brake rigging etc. Where I have space for the wipers I prefer to use rather than the plunger type as thay are easly maintained /replaced where as with the plungers it means taking the loco apart wheels off etc if you have an issue with a sticky one for example. Edit I will try and remember to take some photos of the next one I do and put up a post on it. I like the term "sponsor" re Bunnings Hardware I think most of us DIY types and 3/4 of the tradies Are Sponsors as well, plus I like the BBQ at the front door
Primed and ready for the unsteady hand a pile of white metal detail item to paint well I primed them in the late afternoon so will wait until tomorrow to put the colours on Sacks, cases, trunks, Pigions escaped from their baskets, track plates and one odd looking cat? I think that is what it is supposed to be. Attached files
Congratulation on picture of the week Chris. Another in a long line of great build images. Truly well done. Toto
Thanks Toto, POTW was most unexpected Here's a teaser for a post I'll pot up after dinner. Back Scene for Moonan Flats
Congrats on POTW, well deserved indeed ! As for the backscene, that looks great and no doubt will look better in place. Must admit though, it's a bu##er of a job pasting them into place. Cheers, Gary.
Congratulations on picture of the week Chris how are you fixing the backscene or do you have a trusted method... I use double sided tape but it's still less than perfect. Ian vt
A photo Backscene for Moonan Flats This is some thing I had been putting off doing for a while firstly it was going to need two people and I was not sure how it was going to look on such a shallow layout. The Back Scene chosen is from the Haskell Model Company and is a vinyl material with a self adhesive backing (basically a big sticker) www.haskellco.net for any one interested in seeing other back scene's they do. So a start was made, Step 1 strip to top off the layout Step 2 assemble the layout top, laying across the back deck pool table with the back down to make it easier too work the sticker into place Step 3 Measure the start point and cut in around the frame. Step 4 start working towards the other end cutting in around the pelmet braces as we went. Step5 get to the other end and cut out opening in the end of the layout top for the trains to come through trick here is to cut back at an 45'angle from each corner 15mm then cut the centre out from the end of each cut this leaves enough to roll over the edge ie no sharp cut off edge. Step 6 Add some scenic's along the back edge of the layout boards to hide the join between the layout and photo, sorry forgot to take photo of this bit see the photos below step8 Step7. Refit top to layout, now it's a "Model Railway" Step8 the most important "Step" of all thank Shelley for helping otherwise there would have been a lot of 's And for taking the photos, then take photos of the "Model Railway" and admire your handy work with a cool drink. WOW what a change in the look of Moonan Flats. Back Scene for Moonan Flats Back Scene for Moonan Flats That's it, for a long post, about not much but what a change to the look of the Model Railway it has made. May even get some trains back out now and have a shunt.
It blends in brilliantly with the rest.. superb and again a great thread for us to learn from... great photos Shelly Ian vt ps got to be another POTW there what do you think all
