It is a good feeling to get a loco moving on the layout, even if it is just for 'testing purposes'. It will be even better when you get to shunt some rollingstock about. Having a loco running will inspire you even more to complete the next couple of boards. Cheers, Gary.
Cheers Gary it went pretty good but had a couple of stalls on the points a. pva/varnish had gotten on one ... b. the wire in groove on one wasn't travelling the full distance.. one loco needed repairing but sorted and the Pug needed its wheels balancing... so overall a satisfactory day. Ian
A curious question for you Ian, can you tell me what method of uncoupling you will be using ?? Also, how many engines will you run on the layout at any given time ?? Cheers, Gary.
Hi Gary I'd call that an interesting question a. The uncouplers are Peco springy thingy ramps (sorry not sure of exact description and I'll only be running 3 locos at any time ... either 2 x J72's or 3f's (or 1 of each) and either the 0 4 2T and autocoach or a larger freight. Then it's rule 1 for playtime with guest locos possibly Tri-ang. Ian
Thanks Ian. If I'm correct, the Peco spring thingy ramps are very similar to the Hornby uncoupling ramps that sit between the rails. I have sen strips of clear 'shirt box' plastic used in the same manner as the Peco/Hornby uncoupling ramps. Using clear plastic makes it look as if they are not there ! Gormo produced a video a while ago, where he has super-glued or araldited a staple to the vertical section of the coupler and utilised small neodymium magnets burried in the ballast. Basically, it is the Brian Kirby method of uncoupling, with some adjustments for shunting. Here is Gormo's video of his method : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJSXJZ5P0Ug#t=3.822675 Cheers, Gary.
Whilst on uncoupling, Gormo produced another great video on his 'staple bending jig'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTZnfxoC1xQ&ebc=ANyPxKr98qy49QxhI6WOFPAaoQWQsbiXjPhUM6Sbuk-cfUSZvpy7vFEd28v6YrhUeuldHYK07P_oOLxOX7C9KEhUNAre3tw1GQ Cheers, Gary.
Thanks Gary I would prefer an alternative to the springy thingy and have seen clear plastic being used, but as my 'plonk' is a long term project I shall look at the staple/magnet idea. Cheers for the encouragement by the way, and on top of that the other 5/8ths has said she'll buy me a Guagemaster twin controller for my birthday next month... happy days.
Hi Ian The Peco ones are very similar to the Hornby ones, I had issues with the dropper of the coupling catching the leading edge of the uncoupler. I have seen (somewhere and I cant quite remember where) someone removed the spring from the uncoupler, and used a wire / cam arrangement, that lifted the concoupler by pulling on a wire rod. Should be an easy fix for a man with your wire in tube skills. Paul
Interesting idea that Paul cheers, and I'm also adept at removing the wire from the other 5/8ths Cava. Ian
Now Ian, you must tell us. . . . what use on the layout have you found for that Cava wire ??? Great to see you are running locos mate, makes all that effort you've put in worth while ( and puts you way ahead of me and Toto ) Cheers Matt
ianvolvo46 wrote: Nice work Ian Congrats on getting the trains running I think I mentioned before I like the J72's a realy nicely proportioned little engine. The H&M duet is a great bit of gear with its wave control etc you can adjust to run just about anything or any type of motor on them and get nice slow running. I have a gauge master controller for my DC run trains but have always kept the H&M as a back up I don't think you could kill one if you tried.
Matt, Everyone's ahead of you and me. I'm the only one with a loco launch pad though. Flying class 33's ............ My claim to fame. Toto
Hi Chris/Toto ... well the tests went pretty well but I had couple of issues with a couple of points ... but... they were intermittent... and... now I realize the fault was due to direct sunlight on the rails 18 degrees + so will conduct further play...? ... tests ... today in the shade. J72 ran very well but Pug needed wheels balancing, t'other one (0 6 0 see previous picture) acted numpty due to old Tri-ang chassis. However I did identify the need for a shelf to hold the controller so built one. Watch this space y'all. Ian
Further progress of sorts, just built a shelf to hold my controller when testing. It has brass engineers' dowels so that it can be bolted to either end of the boards whenever I want to test (play). It's also given me the idea to one day build a larger section as a mobile fiddle yard that can be added to either half of my layout or as a middle 'leaf' between the 2. This is gonna require some serious vino tinto Attached files
Or 3 traversers, left, right and center, and if you win the lottery Euro and UK, you could always get one of the verticle traversers Toto was drooling over at the Glasgow show. So tempted to try and build one, just to brass him off Paul
Ian I can confirm it was a full on drool / dribble and the stand owner had to ask him to move away as he was making a right mess on the glass covering the vertical traverser thingy Cheers Matt
It was a drool , very messy too. Apparently lead in times for the vertical traverser stretch out to October of this year. It's still a consideration although at a grand I'd need to come up with one v,dry good reason to get it past SWMBO. .......... I'm working on it. Cheers Toto
