Some better pictures. I've replaced the windows in this building. Not as "industrial" but certainly less flat than the original screen printed ones which is important given its prominent location at the very front. Finally, views like this is why I took the decision to remove the garage (ignore the backscene shadow). Slow progress, but it's coming along. Matt
Yesterday's project: a very first tree. Haven't built a tree for about 15 years, and those weren't much good anyway! It's something I've been wanting to make for ages but never had enough of a completed scene to put one in until now. Changed many times during construction as I changed the shape based on observations of real trees outside. It's made from that green coated florist wire stuff which is nice and easy to twist (and untwist when you need to make a change) with other smaller wire branches glued on as required. Matt
I've been ill since the weekend (nothing serious but it's kept me off work). It's been a blessing in disguise because I've had a bit of free time I'd not have had otherwise. I've done an hour or so on the tree this morning and I spent this time working on the trunk - thickening it up and further blending the texture from the wire. I originally used Flexibark from Greenscene for the, er, bark, but it's a bit course for my liking. I used cellulose thinner to thin regular model filler to a paste like consistency and then brushed this on as needed. Still a bit more to do. A start has also been made on the foliage using Seafoam. I bought this years and years ago and never used it - glad I've finally found a use for it! Incidentally the price sticker on the packaging says £3.45. Compare that to the £15 or so it costs now!
Matt this is right up my street, a freight only layout. Looking at some of your wagon build they are nicely built and the weathering is nicely done..
I grow my own seafoam, using the little black specks on the branches, they're the plants seeds. Plant around March, harvest June/July when the plant has died off. Pete.
Tree is now completed - an enjoyable side project and I hope to make more once I progress with the scenery. Incidentally, the garage (that was POTW) is available. If anyone would like to purchase it, drop me a PM. Matt
Bit more layout progress: Painting of the house (left front view blocker) has commenced. Obviously still a work in progress at this stage, but getting there. Matt
The tree is very convincing. What are you using for your house painting ? Looks like a nice base shade. Toto
Hi Toto, It's not a specific shade, it's mixed by eye from Red Brown and Orange. Interestingly, I found it much more difficult getting a suitable shade than usual. My mixes were either too dark or too orange. This was the fourth attempt! Matt
Hi all, Still in the spirit of recycling (stock and grounded van body) I've turned my attention to one of the layout buildings. The low relief background building annoys me - not the shape or size - more the fact it has no real purpose given its proximity to the track. Surely there would be some sort of loading/unloading facility... You may remember the garage I built for the front of the layout - this is now surplus to requirements but I really like the door! So after a bit of deconstruction... And some chopping and cutting... I have a entry point into the warehouse. Matt
Nicely done Matt, I reckon you can mix and match lots of things from different kits and sources. Initially, you may look at it and think "I`m not sure if that`s right " but once everything is painted, it ties it altogether and makes perfect sense. Gormo
Bit more recycling of the garage - I'm determined to reuse as many bits as I can! This micro building utilises one end wall cut up, and a bit of roof. Reassembled in a different way, and repainted and it's an extension to the warehouse. Matt
