I have 3 of these to do. one is complete apart from a few bits of paint, so that ones out. I have one part done and one unstarted on that both have sat in my desk for nearly 12 months.

I will be using the part finished one for this entry. (Although I may add in and do some of the third to progress that one too...)

So, it’s an O gauge model, it’s designed this time by SimonBRBlue from another well known model railway forum, and printed by Shapeways and Simon himself. It’s made from 3 different materials, the White flexible, the super detail and the grey is from simons own FDM 3D printed. I will need to look back at where I got the wheels from. Couplings are by Peco, but frankly, I’m not impressed as they seem shorter than other instanter links and make linking two wagons hard. It has fixed buffers...

the final bit which you will see on This and the other finished wagon, are the WH Davies builders plates by myself and the lower door locking handles. There is some pipe working to do still and the lower door handles to fit. Lamp brackets and paint. Transfers are from my own artwork.

oh, and before we get to the photos, the wagon I’m building is not for me, it for a good friend of mine who was the main man for preserving the real item. The 3rd one is for the NSR museum.

(final photo is of the finished model with my 08 just so you can see no cheating!)

Blast. Misread the rules. Read it as start date was the 7th. Been sat here waiting to start. Now I’m at work! :giggle:

    I’ll make a start soon.

I’m sorry, I’ve not been able to make a start as yet due to shifts, working on cars and family commitments.
However, the kiddywinks are away with my parents this weekend so I hope to get something started and maybe even some paint on the model.
All I need is for her in doors to be at work and sort all the other tasks I have.

although, I think this may be a short project compared to others so I may do the unstated one as well.

hopefully this weekend I can make a delayed start.

Finally made a start. Although making the locking bars you will see below appears to be (for now) the last item from my 3D printer for now as it’s packed up. Not sure yet if it’s the wiring to the stepper motor or the stepper motor it’s self.

anyway, back to the model. I’ve made a start on one side of the lower door locks. The clear plastic handles and rods are from my own design from the regal thing and scaled to fit. Sadly, when Simon designed his model, he didn’t leave the correct gap or have the pneumatic door rams in the correct place, so I’ve had to trim them and glue them in with Super glue.

here are the handles trimmed ready to glue on.

And here is where they will be going.

So first we glue on the pull handles.

These are simply sprung angle bars with a lever hanging vertical on the real item that has a cut out on the end of the bar which simply wedges against the lower hopper door to stop it being opened by the operating handle on the sole bar if your not pulling it away from the door.

    6E9F2B55-5562-42E7-BD58-950ADBB2978F.jpeg

that’s the inner handles done. It should be one rod hinges under the sole bar to the far end, but as said, the way Simon designed his model (wrongly) the bracket to hold the door rams to the sole bar is in the way, so they have been cut in to two with a section removed. It’s should run under and behind the bracket.

and here is the other end. Small and Fiddelly!

So today i completed the other side of the wagon. I realise I forgot to photograph the locking bars last night.

sorry the colours don’t make it stand out much but it will when painted.

hopefully this close up shows better. You can see here where I had to compromise the original kit and my additional detail parts.

I'll just refer to the original for a moment so you can all see what I'm refering to.
    IMG_3183.JPG

here are the drop handles to pull to release the bars locking the discharge doors - the real thing has a second arm at right angles you can see here to go to the other side. It was a bit too much for me to model and probably never seen.

    IMG_3190.JPG

This shows the side of the pneumatic piston that connects to the discharge doors- top left you can see the square shaft that connects to the drop handles above running behind its bracket.

So with the lower half complete, I moved on to complete the air pipe runs from the operating handle/valve above the sole bar that run to the top doors and door lock.

I have already done the top half pipe runs from some small florist wire. It’s 15g from “The Range”.
    69D8AF09-2C85-4833-959B-AC8CA6A200C5.jpeg

The pipe run ends where it goes through the support beam. It also allows me to have the chassis and top as two separate parts for painting like you would a loco.
C07C0BB6-474E-4DA7-98AF-EB109AB481AF.jpeg Some of the larger air pipes (the brake system) was cast in as part of SimonBRBlues model and it is correct so didn’t need any work.
The clear part above the sole bar is the operating valve. On the front is an airline valve where you would plug your shore feed in. This “powers up” the top doors. The small square part above is the operating handle. Behind this 3 pipes exit and travel up to the top half of the wagon. 1 for the lock mechanism and two for the door pneumatics.

Heres the full size handle - the air line plug is to the left. You can see the three (dirty grey) pipes just to the left of the handle curving upwards

    IMG_3178.JPG

And the top half.. I'll try and explain this best I can of how it works..
    IMG_3204.JPG

The end of the wagon with the doors in the closed position.

    IMG_5047.JPG

This is the door lock mechanism. Its a simple sprung air lock - when you move the handle to open it retracts the pin inside the spring - this allows the middle section to lift out - By keeping the handle in the open now moves the air supply to the main door pneumatic - oddly, this only pushes at one end on one side and at the same time does the same at the other end mirror image with the other door - it only opens one door at a time though, then opens the second. The third pipe is for the closure of the doors. ones the doors are closed the spring pin returns back in and locks the door closed.

Returning back to the model, I created the lower pipe runs much the same as the higher ones, but these are more closely grouped.
Supergluing 3 wires together to make the pipes I started to shape them to fit. 63AEBC25-4CF6-467D-854C-D19F33DFDD7B.jpeg Here are the first ones glued at the end where it will go on to the back of the operating handle.
    36A24D8D-4F7E-4160-AE83-7A975CD9E110.jpeg

I then fashioned it up in shape to fit behind the bulk head following its route up to the end spreader bar.
I had also made a start on the second pipe run for the opposite end.
    27A4188A-1E89-422B-9A97-5FC961893F71.jpeg

And installed. Once I’d trimmed it to length I glued the top end then secured it in place using more superglue.

With the other end done (yes there is a 1 and 2 end!) it was time to replace the top and ensure it all fitted and didn’t foul the body.

that’s nearly all that’s needed for the model. Next it’s on to final prep for painting.

I’m now at the point where I’m pondering how to paint it.

the last one was sprayed all over white and I hand painted the black of the chassis.
This time I’m considering (as it’s rattle can painted) about priming the chassis white, mask the top and spray the black, then mask the black when dry and respray the gloss white for the top half. The actual hopper would be painted separate. However, those that remember me doing the last one may recall I had masking issues.

Cheers chaps. See how we go. There will be a lot of hand painted bits once the main two prime colours are done. But it’s literally yellow and silver. Small bit of red.
However, if anyone has an idea for making Transfers, I have artwork and could do with a better way to print them, as printing the last ones, didn’t like Black when trimmed.

And so we move to the paint booth...

well, actually it’s an old cardboard box with a Ikea lazy Susan in it and a block of florists thingy...

so, first coat of white primer for the under side.

Now to mask off and put the black coat on the chassis.
