I'm more tired than anything else, and have a cough like a rag mans horse. :avatar: I think the heater in the shed will be on full blast this weekend.

Perhaps you can tell me if you can really use permenant marker pen as a 'mask' to stop solder running where you don't need it.....I forgot who told me, but would love to know if it's true!

    Doug

PS, on my bench the implement is called a 'soddering' iron, with good reason

    Hi Chubber,

Never heard of the use of the permanent marker but could be handy to know. Especially if it repeals solder but takes paint to cover it after building works are complete.

Maybe a little experiment with a bit scrap etch.

    Cheers

    Toto.

A quick clean with acetone (you can use nail varnish remover - but only the really cheap and nasty stuff that doesn't contain lanolin etc, and definitely not SWMBO's own stock) will remove the permanent marker, not sure if its works as a solder repellent but the theory is sound.

Not so sure about the TV part of it. I watch very little TV. I'd rather read instead.:avatar:

A word for his nibs, there are predilection holes in the brake van for fitting the hand rails, they need drills out. Do it right at the beginning prior to building the sides etc into the main carcass. It will make it easier as you are not exerting any pressure onto the build that way. You probably knew this anyway but just thought I'd reconfirm the idea.

I'll get these holes bored out next with the use of a pin vice then commence with the main build again. Looking forward to getting back on the case.

    Cheers

Another thing ...... These lilt safety rails that cross each ot the balcony entrances. If I were doing this again, I'd fit them after the walls are put together as there is a little slot for them to be located through. I think it would make it easier to get them in the right position and aid holding them in place for soldering. ..... Just opinion though. Find your own way.

    Cheers

Hi Doug, yes it doe's work, I've used it myself on a few occasions, mostly when I have been assembling valve gear. I have also used Carrs blacking for brass, that works too.

    Cheer's, Pete.

Thanks Pete, I'm thinking forward to the next OO9 valve gear (when I finally start modelling again), converting a GF 08 chassis into a steamer.

Greese prafe pooper is a tidge too thick as separator!

    So,
back in the shed and carrying on with the brake van build. I started off by drilling out the holes for the door handles and cutting them to size and fitting them.

Then the corridor floor has to be fitted .......

and then a very thin strip to the top arched edge of the outside wall and another thin piece along the varandah edge in the middle to add depth to the end wall.

the strip to the top arched edge is not so obvious ......

you might be able to see it a bit better in the above image. You should be able to pick out the solder line.........

and that is where I am at for the moment. Now ...... the same to do at the other end.
    cheers for now

Back in the shed today to press on a bit. Took the luxury of time out yesterday afternoon to watch the scots skelp the Aussies at rugby yesterday afternoon. I had to mention it as it could be another few years before we ever do that again. :avatar:

So ..... The completion of the other end of the wagon then either install the tiny wee rivet detail bits or move on to the foot plates and sole bars etc. Notice, ...... We are getting closer to the white metal hits .......... Ooooooooooo. :avatar: the two part epoxy will be making its debut. :avatar:

    Catch up later.

    Cheers

I was putting my recently purchased kits into the shed today only to be reminded of a rather abandoned looking BR brake van that has been started.

I'll need to get cracking with this again. Hopefully get moving now that the Christmas holiday period is approaching. Far too easily distracted. :avatar:

An update soon with a little luck

    Cheers
