Toto I really admire what you are doing with this kit, you set your stall out and you get on with it piece by piece. I should think the BR 20 ton brake van isn't the easiest of rolling stock kits to work on, when I did my One for the Wagon one (which still isn't finished) it was a nightmare and I had just taken the soldering plunge then, so I say hats off to you dude:tophat: and I'm enjoying following your builds. http://www.click I'll drink to that. Cheers for now Paul

    Thanks Steve and Paul,

It'll get there. I am going to solder in a couple of false roofs on the veranda to provide a bit more strength now that my sheet brass has arrived. I'll get on to that tonight.

    Thanks all for the encouragement.

    Well,
so far I have the two false roofs cut and soldered into place. they are not cut the neatest but they wont be seen anyway .... they are just to add some structural strength to the kit.
Here is where I started ......

and the false roof section .......

in place ........ and soldered ......

    Then ........

    number two .......

again, these edges wont be seen otherwise I would have made the effort to get them square and dressed off.

    and from the underside ........
now back to do the second sole bar.
    cheers

    Forgot,

I am still thinking of inserting a floor into the main guard area. Possibly followed by some form of bench seating.

The floor is something else that I would install earlier on in the build in future as again it would offer more rigidity and assist keep the overall chassis square.

    Cheers

If you go to Slaters Plasticard website and look for product codes X705301 and X705302 they are lost wax brass castings of the BR 20 ton brake van Stove and the Stancheon column and hand brake wheel. Now from memory the interiors of these vans were pretty much all the same consisting of the two inbuilt ducket seats, the coal box and tool box. on the same end and on the opposite side from the stove was a lecture for the guard to write up his consist loadings and calculate train braking force.
cheers for now,York Paul... please note the new name so as not to get confused with Paul from Dundee :avatar: because it doesn't take much to confuse me.

The build is coming together nicely. You can see the difference in the soldering techniques as well as using the different iron. Crack on and it will be done before you know it.

Rather than lost wax castings Toto, it would be a good time to perfect your styrene scratch building. The floor you could do from scribed balsa or styrene and drop it in all as one...

    Cheers, Gary.

This stuff is what Laurie put me onto:-

I also use it to bond resin casts to white metal.

The build is coming along well mate, I think you have been a little hard on yourself previously, but you have shown you're up to the job. Well done!

Silly as it might sound you can also use good old PVA especially in the van floor where it's slight flexibility will help to dampen noise too

Time to stop. Made a real shambles of one of the buffer beams. Of course rather than stop when I seen it coming, I continued and tried to fix it as I was going ...... the result....... one unholy mess.
Ive stopped for the moment whilst I cool off and refocus. I'll continue with it tomorrow starting with cleaning up the parts. Need to start with some fresh gusto.
now ...... where is my brandy.
    cheers for now

    Hi Toto,
It happens even when you are experienced.
Start with a fresh mind and then take it off, clean it up and go again - the beauty of solder!
