This is the first part of a two part video showing me designing and building the vicarage for St Eldar's church. A number of people had mentioned that they were nervous of scratch building. I hadn't scratch-built anything before returning to modelling a couple of years ago. I hope this encourages others to give it a go so that your layout has something unique on it. Second part on Monday, to help ease back to work blues for those of you still in harness.

Having threatened to do it for a while I finally bought a spy pen to make a track cam that will fit on an N gauge layout. In this video I show you my first attempts at using it, and how I have mounted the camera.

    Hi Steve,

very enjoyable video. Some great platform shots there. Isn't it fantastic what can be achieved through the use of these small cameras. James bond indeed. Many thanks for sharing. well worth watching.

    cheers

Thanks Toto. I was amazed at the quality of the image from so small a camera. Looking forward to playing with this over the next few weeks

Time for the latest update as I show you the workings of my tortured mind in deciding how to landscape the area between the Church and Grey Havens station. The Vicar get a shed for his model railway, I solve the problem of having too puny a hedge, and I play with some trains as well. Enjoy

Very good video with a great commentary. the whole area is really taking shape. I like the way you have used the masking tape / grass strips. The vicarage grounds are taking shape as well.

    looking forward to seeing more

    cheers

Thanks Toto. I was pleased that the idea about the grass strip worked. much tidier than trying to put scenic grass straight on the board.

Time for the April Update looking at the work being done on the layout in addition to the scenic work around Grey havens station and the Vicarage. Hope you enjoy.

This is the first of two videos on the detailed scenic work on the garden of the vicarage. There was far more work involved in this than I anticipated. Not least having to make dahlias and rose bushes from a kit which I thought would be ready to plant and painted. But what japes I had making them up!

And here is the second part of the two part series from my YouTube channel showing the completed garden. I cannot abide gardening as a pastime but it seems that kept at 2nn to the ft I have a bit of a knack for it

Hi Steve, great video I've just watched it, that garden looks really well tended  Nice idea about the fence made from offcut sprues.

Thanks very much. It really was a revelation moment with the sprues. I must be developing Modellers’ eye being able to repurpose things!

Well it's certainly working for you Steve I rarely throw anything away that could otherwise be deemed scrap, I keep offcuts of Plasticard and brass etch frames, even lollipop sticks. On my layout Elton Crossing I've got a run of lineside telegraph poles which are by Slaters, on the real location there was a cross run of power cables that were carried by thicker stemmed poles I noticed that wooden Kebab sticks were very similar in size so I've used them as well.

So, another skill to acquire was to be able to renumber an engine. This video shows my first attempts

Time for the dualling of the line from Grey Havens to Sharky's End, something nice and simple I thought. About half way through the events in this the latest video from my YouTube channel, I was reminded of that bit in the Italian Job, where Michael Cain says "You only had to blow the b***dy doors off!"

Having discovered I am something of a latter-day Capability Brown, its time to finish the gardens at Grey Havens. Gardens being taken in my stride now it is time to start building hillsides too.
