Ok. So I have my drawing on screen. I’ve scaled it (1/1) gone on to sketch, selected the background from the 3 planes.. and then all
I can do is create a blue box which vanishes. Won’t let me draw any lines. Do I need to select something else?

    Clicked design.

    Got this menu box…
    Selected solid
Can’t attach next photo? Keeps coming up error on platform one.. see next post

    What happened here?
I think I do need to go back to basics, or just go back to 123 design. I could have don’t it by now, just can’t put the picture in on there.

Andy the easy way to create a sketch is to hit the button highlighted in blue:

To import your lamppost you need to Insert . Canvas and follow the simple instructions. You can then go to CANVAS on the left and use CALIBRATE or EDIT to scale it or set it up properly.

Ahh yes but that's because you have mainly sent your time drawing up rolling stock. I am sure that you can leave me standing when it comes to efficient ways of drawing wagons.

It's near the bottom of the create menu.

    Hi Andy,
You can pretty much ignore this menu as you rarely need to use it.
click into the sketch behind it to start drawing.

Actually Andy, I would suggest unchecking the 3D sketch button (right at the bottom of the sketch menu) that will stop you from being able to sketch on the wrong plane and carry it across like you have in your image.

The 3D sketch function is there for if you want to do a sweep or add a line or points between two different planes. Not something that you use very often and certainly it's confusing to a beginner (it's still confuses me and I have used it to good purpose a few times...)

    Absolutely no problem Andy,
For me the whole point of my posting on forums is to help people, while hopefully developing my skills along the way. If you hadn't asked the question, I may never had a dabble at a lamp post and see what I would have missed...

    Andy,

It seems to me the thread title says it all Dabbling. It's the prefect vehicle for any and all 'how do' you do Fusion 360 questions, come one come all.
Your lamppost query has shown me another 360 function and how to use it which is just perfect.

    Wow! Fantastic work Rob.

And many thanks. That was never my intention, to ask, but it would be a shame not to use it now. That’s most kind.
Btw, these would also have featured the usual 4 sided lamp heads as well as the Suggs gas lamp as shown in the drawing, it also appears to be fairly generic to Midland areas in this case. I wonder if some of these were off the shelf items so to speak?

I wouldn't be surprised Andy, there were a lot of independent suppliers to railway companies and they even supplied each other with some items, despite the overarching rivalries.

Just to finish this off, because it's meant to represent something that has been cast I went round and softened some of the edges using the fillet tool

It was pointed out over on Western Thunder that the inset in the base should have the profile all the way around which I agree it should but I couldn't work out how to do it. As always the minute that I started to reply to the gent who raised it I thought of how I might achieve it.

So Ive spent a short while adjusting the head and added it to Robs post.

I still have a little work to do on it, then work out how to get a wire feed to the LED!
