Try it with a red base, a couple of thin coats of Antique pine, and a final wash of black enamel wash, thinned heavily with neat thinners to give the weathered effect in the pictures.

I'll keep that one in mind, thanks Paul. I've got a couple of old US timber coaches to try out a couple of methods on before tackling at least three full rakes of these 12 wheel cars

The CAM is coming along quite nicely Evan, great job. I love the photo of the 38 leading its train (Southern Highlands Express ??) through Redfern.

    Cheers, Gary.

Thanks Gary, and that is the Southern Highlands Express behind the 38.

Now if only we could find a colour photo of a C38 hauling a full rake of varnished 72'6" cars :scratchchin:

I was speaking with Joe (Casula Hobbies) at Thornleigh, and he is looking at producing rakes of coaches in varnish finish. Once he finds someone who can do a bulk (BULK !) order, I'm positive he'll go ahead with it.

    Cheers, Gary.

Ready to run NSW outline varnished stock? Now that would be something for the books!

It beats scratchbuilding two of these doors for the CAM, followed by another eight for TAMs, four for additional CAMs, eight for TFXs, four for a TBC and four for dining car AB90....

And this is just for the three consists I'm building presently!

Yes, I'll be 3D printing them, Paul. Either that or using the print as a master for casting them. Still a bit more work do be done on the CAD file first though

I have seen a lot of these coach conversions in the Australian Model Railway Magazine during the late 80's. Are you working off data sheets or measuring up the real 12":1' models ?

    Cheers, Gary.

There was also a few done in the early 2000s. I'm working off measuring up 12" to the ft survivors, as well as scaling off period photographs for details which have long since vanished in the rebuilding of the cars throughout the years

On another note, here's the finished CAD model

Thanks Chris, but I'm just an amateur who knows how to use a tape measure and input dimensions

Looking forward to seeing the results.

I must admit the prospect of 3D modelling certainly appeals to me, but don't know if I have the skills, patience or dosh to progress any further.

    Evan,

I have a book at home of Central Station during the steam and early diesel/electric period. Lots of colour photo's but don't know if it has the carriages you are after in them.

I can have a look if you are interested.

The NSW state library and the National Library of Australia both have photos online. NSW database is called picman and the NLA one is called Trove. Worth a browse.
