SMR CHRIS wrote: Hi Chris, the Mega Kits brand took over The Gateneal range and rebranded them, they had a pretty poor reputation at the time for being unbuildable however if you were a reasonable scratchbuilder they could make nice models, I built two, one was a Johnson 1F tank, I made my own chassis and chucked half the whitemetal fittings, the other was an industrial 0-6-0 with outside cylinders that clipped anything that was in loading gauge, platforms etc, wish I still had them I was a fool for selling them . The backscene looks brill! I,ve been looking for one for my photo plank, I think I will probably end up making my own as I can,t find anything suitable . Cheers, Pete.
Thanks for the info on the mega kits Pete. Have to say the little 0-6-0 looks like it was a very basic build so may have been one of there better kits and is quite solid as I found out trying to straighten it out Getting tempted to take the sound decoder out of the J94 that is rarely use and fit to the little 0-6-0 Mega loco.
Kimbo wrote: Very nice Kim Looks a lot better than my one Yours has even got sanders May have to make some when Its repainted it's going to be very similar to yours I will probably gets some decals for the SMR as well and put on the side tanks to further confuse people of the loco's origins (it's similar but not the same as one that worked in the hunter coal fields)
Chris when I get my next batch of resin I will cast some sand boxes for you. Your not in a rush are you? By the way, mine is driven from the centre axle but it is still a noisy beast at speed. It has a Zimo decoder fitted with directional lighting & firebox flicker but no cab detailing like yours.
Kimbo wrote: Thanks Kim in No Rush thanks for the offer of the sand boxes, I have a few other projects before this repaint and detail, it's even going to get air brakes with a Westinghouse air compressor so I can have the sounds of the pump going. I really like that sound of the Westinghouse compressors randomly coming on when the loco's are stabled. The cab detail I don't think is right on my tank as the firebox is too short but it dose have all the back head detail. Unless there were two version the eBay one had a much longer firebox into the cab on my red 0-6-0 it's a stretch for the fireman to throw the coal from the bunker to the firebox hole My gears are quiet at slow speeds but at mainline spreeds also gets noisy not that in reality it should ever get that fast whilst shunting, may be able to adjust or "soft mount" the motor to fix. Will look at it when I fit a decoder and report back.
Nice job on the Loco Chris ........ looking forward to the hoppers getting the make over. cheers toto
Toto wrote: Hi Toto the little black one is Kim's redo of the same loco as my red one and I agree it is really nice, it won't be long before my one looks similar to Kim's One project for after the exhibition. Tonights Project is some thing that's been bugging me for a while. It's the water tower, well it's at Moonan Flats but has been a round a bit at least 3 other layouts last one and were it will go back to was East Maitland. The old tank on East Maitland. East Maitland O scale layout Now moved to Moonan Flats just like the prototype railways do recycled. 3531 at Moonan Flats I Have the all parts, side mouldings, stand timber etc somewhere to build a nice new one but can't find the parts may have gone to storage with most of my OO stock. This tanks mouldings are a Urethane material So this old one,it's been a stand in and was intended to have a roof top fitted but being so close to the back scene there's not enough room for it's over hang. What to do it didn't look right with a solid top so I decided to open it up and lower to give space for some water. So out with the scalpel the old glue was well stuck but soon it was in enough peices to remove the spacers and the top lowered to a position the imitation of water could be added. Water tower make over under way Water tower make over under way It needs some more detail now for the stays inside the tank but visually it looks better once the stays are fitted I will repaint and weather. Water tower make over under way by CHRIS, on Flickr End of part one of water tank make over.
Burning the midnight oil again Chris !!! Great little upgrade even if it was a **%%$£!! to get it part. Paint or varnish to give the water effect?
Hi Kim Yes do a lot of my modelling out of hours due to the spinal fusion often can't get to sleep Re the water Thinking I'm going to paint some dark colour then some varnish/estapol I have a couple of mm to play with. Attached files
No point lying there in pain Chris when you can be so productive. Yes that sounds like a good plan, dark brown with a hint of dark green as opposed to jet black. If you had a bit more depth it could have been topped off with a piece of 1mm glass, as dust and dirt on a varnished surface can be a real pain to clean up.
Kim it would be great to use some glass or Perspex but the detail parts that are going in stop the use of it unfortunately as they angle to the sides and wire stays cross the corners and the middle of the tank. The glass would have Made it nice and easy and a lot less messy
Sorry for those waiting for the water tank to fill Had a super busy day with appointments all over clocked up some serious K's in the car today and I'm stuffed so sitting down to cut little bits for the tank will have to wait for tomorrow. may even get some sleep tonight.
Just cos youre knackered, is no excuse for slacking, better hope the flounder doesn't see this sort of attitude developing, sheesh Enjoy the kip when you can Chris, It's when I do some of my best work, just find itr difficult to share Paul
Hi Chris, Paul's the slave driver not me. take a well earned rest ...... But not for too long ! Good work Sir. Cheers Toto
Up late again so a 1am decided to build something to make it easier on the operators at the exhibition If running the C38 on the passanger you would have had to turn the loco every time due to the hook coupler so I decided to see if a Knuckle / Screw link combo similar to what one or two c38class Locos had fitted could be knocked up. I started with a procraft Scale operating Knuckle coupler a Slaters hook mount plate and Screw link, some scrap brass from an etch and with a little bit of cutting, soldering, burnt fingers A coupler was cobbled together and this is the result it still needs the corners rounding off and paint but it works well. Photo sequence of the positioning for various combos. Knuckle use position 38class Front coupler with Knuckle and screw link comb Knuckle stored I put a slight upturn on the Botton plate that allows the knuckle to stay round in this position and provides a little support to th knuckle when in the to be used position. 38class Front coupler with Knuckle and screw link comb Screw Link in use position with knuckle stored. 38class Front coupler with Knuckle and screw link comb Coupled to a train 38class Front coupler with Knuckle and screw link comb The coupling mounts using brass section with spring and split pin just as per a normal hook and link, Using the standard coupler ment no modifications to the loco and gives a small amount of springing will finish it off and take some more photos of the parts. Time for some sleep now I think.
Excellent fiddling and fitting Chris. I think you'll need a tag like Gormo's, 'Gormo Engineering Dept'. Perhaps SMR Fabrications ! I can see that name on a layout as well. Great work on the coupler and it looks the part, excellent. Cheers, Gary.
