    Thanks guys

Started the second chassis, I noticed on some of the onlne images some had a second chassis rod, so.......

The first kit was from an earlier in a red box, the newer version is in a white box, the only differences are new instructions, brake gear now in brown plastic and a different hook for the 3 link coupling, the old one was etched, the new one is cast.

Tank to make up then number 3

Looking forward to the paint coming out. I take it the air brush will be pressed into action, then the transfers, a bit of work with a fibre glass pencil then some weathering.

Looking at photo's the bit that suprised me was they appear rusty rather than Tar covered.

Black livery, probably with Century Oils transfers, these will be my first black wagons I will have tried to weather..

2nd tank is getting glued up, this one will have the filler on center

Finally got started on the paint.

As I'm going to spray indoors, I'm using Acrylic paint, the fumes from Enamel are too bad.

Undercoat - Humbrol No. 1 - grey primer and Tamiya X20A acrylic thinner.

My usual paint / thinner mix is 50:50 or 1 part paint + 1 part thinner, but this seemed a bit too thick. So I went with 1 part paint to 2 parts thinner, seemed like milk, but blocked my air brush up :whatever:

So I cleaned out the airbrush, and diluted the paint a further 50% with thinners, I got two passes before it blocked up again. Same again and sprays perfectly, I'm guessing the ratio is approx 1 part paint to 12 parts thinner, looking on the brightside, I know how to strip and clean my airbrush.

As this is really thin paint, it took a few light coats to get a decent coverage.

I did hand brush the brass buffer shanks

    Now for the black

Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black and Tamiya X-20 thinner

Thinned 1 part paint + 2 parts thinner - sprays beautifully, again very thin so coats will need to be built up.

I did notice online most thin the Tamiya the other way round 2 paint + 1 Thinners, I will try that sometime, but not while i'm on a roll.

    1st coat

Just got to wait for it to dry.

wonder whats wrong with the paint to effect the ratio like that. I thought that was more or less a given. keep us in the picture though. guess who's got painting to try himself. don't need any set backs or the confidence plummets.:avatar:

    Hi Tom

Two different makes of paint, the Tamiya paint is far thinner out of the jar.

I will need to mix more black up to finish the three wagons, so will try 50:50.

More later - away to B&Q for ready mix cement, I have a hole to fill.

I think over the last few days I've handled enough results from anything like that.
In the last 4 months I've had to get the soil pipe unblocked 3 times. So enough was enough, time for a holiday hand shovel a different kind of :bleep6:.
One large hole later, and two breaks in the clay pipe traced, cut the cast iron down pipe, and replaced with plastic pipe, I'm now flushed with success :avatar:, and gained brownie points (maybe not the correct phrase in the current context).

    So back to the modelling

2nd coat, still a bit of touching up.

I think you are definately getting a bit bounce back off your flash. It looked more solid over the skype. Clearly coming on though Paul and will look good once the decals are on etc.

Hi Paul, looking good. What pressure did you use when spraying?

    Hi Kim

12 psi - providing the gauge is correct :whatever:

Tried a mix closer to 50:50, and that sprayed fine with the same settings on the airbrush and compressor, with a better level of coverage - no surprise there then :giggle:

Although, I think I will keep at least one of them with a slightly mottled effect, seal with glosscote, apply the transfers, seal again, and then use a glass fiber brush fade out parts of the transfers coincide with the mottling.

    Gloss coat applied

The transfers supplied are methfix type.

1 st cut / score through the tissue, and lift the required transfer + tissue off the backing paper

As this is a large transfer, I needed to wet the model surface with a mix of 3 parts Meths + 1 part water.
Lay the transfer in place, and wet the transfer with more of the meths mix.
Adjust the transfer until its in the correct location, then press firmly in place. Need to ensure the tissue does not dry out, after approx 15 min (was less in my case) the transfer and tissue will separate, then remove the tissue and allow to dry.

After a few hours (to allow the transfer to harden), I will need to wash off surplus gum with water. Again once dry seal with more gloss cote, before starting to weather the wagon.

Nicely done Paul. What are you going to apply for the weathering process ?
